Absolute top Japanese restaurant not in downtown Vancouver. Friendly staff and a Innovative dinner menu with a few unique dishes. Also, a fun "dim sum" lunch menu for smaller sampler sizes.
After Fuji Sushi shut down years ago, no Japanese restaurant in the port co / Coquitlam area is any good to be honest until we found this place.
On to the food.
Must haves
- wagyu & foie gras aburi - melts in your mouth. What a delight. Great price at 6 for $22 (that's like salmon prices in NY!)
- assortment of sushi tacos - haven't found one I didn't like. There are about 8 of them
- any fresh sashimi and sushi - super fresh and rice to fish ratio is perfect. The rice holds a light soy sauce dip. Marks of a sushi chef veteran
We are here twice in 3 days. Would come back again if we have another a few days.
Highly recommended.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 18, 2024
Food = excellent! 10/10
My favourite were the dynamite tacos. They are very tiny though so you can't get full with one or two. I ordered one with maki.
All the different sushi and tacos were packed with so much flavour! While I loved everything, the crispy shell tacos won me over!
Sesame and matcha ice cream = excellent! 10/10
It was nutty and smooth/velvety. Sweet but not too sweet which I liked. We ordered for three people and it was on the house! We loved it!
The only thing we realized after we left was they forgot to serve the miso soup that I ordered with the maki combo! We were so carried away with our girlfriend catch-up aka gossip that none of us paid attention!
Service = excellent! Friendly staff, very patient and knowledgeable.
Ambiance = clean and comfortable! 10/10
We loved this place and will definitely go back. They treated us so well and we were glad to have had an incredible lunch here.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - J C.Maple Ridge, CanadaMar 8, 2024
Went to Kosho with my hubby for Taste of the Tri Cities, everything was amazing. Kosho food is always a taste treat and beautifully presented; as always service is top notch.
A definite must try!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - JT C.Knight, Vancouver, CanadaMar 4, 2024
Last man eating...
In the area picking up something from a customer and options for a bite was dwindling down. Finally decided for a revisit to this place which I haven't been to for years.
Inside is one of those smaller cozy place; clean, typical and nothing too fancy. I was glad the server seated me on a bigger table instead one of those midget size ones. The server informed me they have a Tri-city special set menu for $35, quick glanced and I opted out on that. Here were the food I ordered;
1. Miso soup (complimentary). Pretty basic but thank you, nice to have a hot soup to warm up to from the cold.
2. Appetizer tempura. Pretty basic and as it should be.
3. Oyster motoyaki. I was glad they were on the shell but didn't know it's their own version of it; cold, marinated with cold pan fried onions on top. The cold oysters didn't really do it for me. Is it really that hard to find just the basic fresh oyster motoyaki baked with Japanese mayo anywhere? lol
4. Foie gras nigiri. Okay this is one of those must order item from here. Loved how the way it is put together and seared. Rich, buttery and creamy that literally melts in your mouth. Very nice!
5. Spider roll. A little bit too basic, could be more generous on the soft shell crab.
6. Saba shio yaki. It was okay, pretty straightforward dish.
7. Assorted sashimi. It was okay, the Akami could be a better cut.
8. Chopped scallops, uni, amaebi nigiris. The chopped scallop was fresh, the uni was a generous amount, I like how the amaebi head was prepared so easier to eat.
9. Albacore toro, Akami, chu toro. The albacore toro was a bit dry, the Akami was fresh, the chu toro just make it to the satisfactory level (as you can tell it lost some of its beautiful colour already).
The restaurant is conveniently located on the corner of Lougheed Hwy and Shaughnessy Street in Port Coquitlam. There are plenty of free parkings in the plaza. Inside the restaurant offers a causal comfortable dining atmosphere.
The food was okay, could be better in some departments, but overall satisfactory level.
As for the service, the staffs here were very friendly and welcoming. And quite accommodating to me being the last person left munching away (sorry over stayed 10mins after closing)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Janice G.Pitt Meadows, Canada313Aug 14, 2024
Went there for lunch today, first time for all three of us. Two of us had lunch box A and 1 I think was lunch box C. Excellent food, very fresh and tasty plus the restaurant is very clean. Will definitely be back.

Every Feb-Mar, I always enjoy the special menu of Taste of Tri Cities event.
KOSHO Japanese restaurant offer reasonable prices and a good menu selection.
Exploring different restaurants and their unique offerings during such events can be a fantastic way to discover new culinary experiences and support local businesses.
Taste of the Tri-Cities Menu $35
Miso soup - I found it a tad salty, but I enjoyed it.
Seaweed salad - Very decent.
California taco & truffle prawn tempura - The sushi taco was good, and the tempura was crispy and also very delicious.
Oyster motoyaki & salmon oshi -The Salmon Oshi was decent. The Oyster Motoyaki was a bit far from my liking. I prefer a bit more creamy texture.
Your choice of 1 main: Japanese chirashi 5pcs / Spicy chirashi / Nigiri sushi 5pcs / Sashimi 6pcs /Crispy chicken donburi / Unagi donburi / Yakisoba chicken of beef
I picked Japanese Chirashi, and my partner chose Sashimi. The presentation of the Sashimi was fantastic. The Chirashi was decent."
Ice cream - yuzu/black sesame/matcha
We picked Matcha and Black Sesame ice cream. I prefer Black Sesame; its flavor was strong. The Matcha flavor was a bit subtle; however, it's okay.
Overall, I highly recommend KOSHO restaurant, especially the Taste of Tri Cities deal; it's great. I will visit this restaurant to try a different menu next time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 1, 2023
Kosho Sushi has the best... and I mean, THE BEST sushi in Port Coquitlam/Coquitlam area. The fish is fresh and tasty, and I love their specialty rolls as well. Lemon tuna roll is to DIE for (warning: contains pine nuts!!!). Not many people seem to think that it's worth it to drive out to the 'burbs for sushi, but this place is 1000% worth the drive. It's a cozy, homey, nondescript sushi place, but it's just so fantastic.
Frank-- the chef-- is incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming, a true culinary genius, seriously. His staff are also very efficient, friendly, and will make you feel warm and welcome.
If you're in the area, or if you're reading this and debating whether to take the chance or not-- let this be a sign!!!! SO. WORTH. IT.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Vickie W.Burnaby, CanadaFeb 26, 2024
Fresh sushi, very friendly service that twice I went to this restaurant, the chef who is also the owner of the restaurant took the time to chat with us as well as other customers.
A hidden gem with creative and authentic Japanese dishes. Better yet, the dishes are not over priced.
In my opinion, everyone should visit this restaurant at least once.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 13, 2022
I would rate this a solid 4 star. I will definitely come back. First, there are a lot of creative dishes here and kudos to the chef for the taco themed sushi. Ironically, this place is next to an authetic taco place :)
I really enoyed both the spicy and regular chirashi don - lots of fresh sashimi and lots of variety. It is a great value I think. The BC roll was nothing special but I liked the chopped scallop tacos and aburi which was perfectly grilled and salted! The tako sunomono was ok but they gave a lot. The chwanmushi had a lot of stuff in it - big piece of shrimp, spinach and shittake mushroom. I personally liked it but it does not have the traditional egg custard taste - also not as soft and creamy as other places I tried. Overall, a solid place to revisit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Holly G.Markham, Canada1814385Aug 18, 2023
Amazing sushi joint hidden in Coquitlam. Their rolls are on par with every other sushi place but their sashimi is what makes this restaurant outstanding (especially the sockeye salmon). Enjoyed all their rolls and the sashimi which just melted in your mouth and it doesn't get fresher than that. On top of it the presentation was excellent. Definitely a must try if you are in the area.
