We were looking for congee with small dishes for a late dinner & check out Kwan Luck Restaurant on Kingsway. It was our first time there. At 9.30pm, it was busy!
The menu was extensive, they gave regular menu & a late night menu that has congee with smaller portion dishes to go with the plain congee or different meat congee.
Staff were friendly & efficient, they were busy . Despite being busy, they take the time to check on you a couple of times, very attentive. Place is decent for a Chinese restaurant, don't expect a 5 star dining environment. However the place is clean, so is the bathroom.
Food is nicely cooked, good quality & very flavourful, absolutely no complaints. We were very satisfied with our meal, we will be back!
Parking is limited, street parking is available.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 7, 2024

I was the C.O. for this expedition, so I got to choose everything. The venue and the menu. There were 12 of us. I did not want high end, it's just not my thing.
The meat of this crtique:
Service: Friendly but haphazard. What do I mean by that? They tend to forget things. An extra seat and place setting needed, plates to serve a cake after they brought out the cake, forks, knife. Very apologetic though.
Ambience. It's not 5* dining. Do not expect high end, but they did have a tablecloth =P, and they do change your plates. It reminds me of restaurants in HK in Sai Kung area. I can imagine riff raff coming here in the late night. One person was swearing in Canto after he found out he was parked in a no parking zone when the staff was calling out the owner of the car. It was an amusing scene, when the seniors were giggling, as a MLC guy looking like a truck driver was swearing. Maybe he was drinking too much.
Food and menu:
Recall that I said the sevice was haphazard? Well, they did give us the menus, but when I mentioned that I was thinking of a large combo meal for 6, but there were 12 of us, she ran away and came back with a different a la carte menu that you can choose from. The fixed item combo a la carte menu was the one I used. Should have given me that to begin with. 8 items of your choice. $235. It includes soup of the day, dessert, and your choice of a whole Hainanese chicken or mutton hot pot + two containers of rice. 11 courses.
Daily specials are on the wall but is all in Chinese. I didn't order any of it.
What I got:
The free:
Hainanese chicken
Mung bean dessert
Soup of the day: chicken feet pork bone carrot soup
Choices:
Honey garlic ribs
Pepper salt pork chops
Beef brisket hot pot
Bitter melon with beef stir fry
Fried fish with back bean sauce
Stir fried spinach in consomme
Silky scrambled eggs with prawns
Can't recall the last one
Add ons:
Shredded pork crispy chow mein
Jelly fish
Everything tasted good, no complaints. The seniors overate and hibernated after that meal.
The YMMV:
I did not see GST on the bill. It was all included.
Three take out containers and bag. They did not charge for it.
Bill? $290
3.5 stars rounded up.
Recommended for larger groups. I'd say at least 4-5 adults, and order off the set item a la carte menu. Significantly better pricing. Individual items off the regular menu can get pricey.
Take this review for what it's worth. It's a small cramped restaurant and it can get a bit loud.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jan 31, 2023
Good food, small restaurant but great service and wasn't to busy when we went. Dishes ranged on average $20-30, quite expensive.
What we ordered:
Family meal - $155
Cream Crab x2 - $30/lb
Shrimp EggFooYung
Deep fried squid
Everything was okay, not amazingly different from any Chinese restaurant. Service was great though, I didn't feel like I felt sick or had to much msg in the food which was great too but overall the bill came out to $415 which is quite pricey for Chinese food but good service and I'd come back for take out.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Aug 16, 2023
Wow, where do I start? This restaurant is quite small for a Chinese restaurant but they make the most of it. The staff were very friendly and they were extremely quick. The service was definitely 5/5! The food was tasty and almost everything was finished! Each dish came out after the other, and the staff made sure to time it right so the dishes would not be cold sitting out at the table.

Excellent service and delicious authentic Chinese food with late night specials in a cozy but run down establishment. Chinatown movie vibes ;)
Highly recommend the deep fried silverfish, honey garlic spareribs, deep fried pork intestines, and ginger pea shoots. Have your food with their plain congee which is thick and creamy. Yummy and warming to the soul.
If note, it's cash only. There is complimentary sweet soup for dessert. Would come again.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - J. David M.Seattle, WA12510Jun 22, 2023
I had a few days to think about my experience at this restaurant before deciding on writing a review. I felt that I needed to share with the community about how my husband and I felt and how we were treated during our re ent visit in June 2023. To say the least, it was heartbreaking to think that the poor treatment we received may have stemmed from being foreigners from the USA or/and our Hispanic background or/and that I am part of the LGBTQ+ community.
We were asked to pay in cash and told cards were not permitted when they clearly had a card-payment processing machine. Our waitress added that she would only accept cash from us and if we paid in USD$, she would exchange to CAD$ 1:1. The exchange rate on June 17, 2023 (when we were in Canada) , per exchange-rates.org, was 1 USD$= 1.3027 CAD$. Our waitress kept talking over us in Mandarin to guests (larger parties) behind us while we were waiting to be seated. I couldn't help but decipher that she was assuring them that we were a "quick table" and that they would be seated next and fast. I understand some Mandarin. The woman was quick to take away the salted peanuts and tea when we told her we did not have USD$. She left us speechless and alone at our table implying we should leave and she would not continue to wait on us. So we left-hungry. and embarrassed.
I genuinely wish this review was about their food- their online menu looked delicious which is why we had gone there in the first place. This was my fist restaurant experience in Canada as an adult and my husbands first visit ever to Canada/restaurant experience. We ended up eating at nearby KFC. We were so discouraged in visiting another local-type restaurant. Who ever reads this, please use this information as you see fit, but I'm hopeful that those who stand against discrimination will avoid encouraging/supporting a place like this.Helpful 2Thanks 2Love this 0Oh no 1 - Jun 19, 2021
Excellent Chinese cuisine along Kingsway Vancouver,Busy place, another gig that is "cash only".,free parking maybe 10-15 cars okay...
I got the fried squid with pepper, garlic and jalopenos,it was very good and tasty, pretty generous serving in here.
For my main entree I ordered the seafood and veggie chowmein..very ordinary and tasted a bit bitter because the veggies they put were big chunk of brocolli..no other greens on it.
Pricey in here when you eat alone, and also depends on what dish you will order... to me everything in the menu is a bit expensive.
They have specialtu dishes from crabs, king crabs and lobster,Tilapia is also available..
Noose level is morethan average when I came.we Asians talk loud..hahahha
10% discount on dine-in and even more on pick up orders.
The server looks like she's already tired but still she wears that customer service generic smile...
Ill try crabs on my next visit.
Pretty neat place only the washroom needs a little make over...Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 1 - Jun 17, 2021
We've always driven by Kwan Luck but never thought to try it out. Last night, my father-in-law brought my husband and me here for a quick weeknight dinner.
The three of us ordered the daily soup, scrambled eggs and prawns, tung choy with beef and half a salt-baked chicken. Simple homey dishes that are fun to share. The food here reminds me of the simple home-cooked dishes that my grandmother would have made for us. While the dishes were a little pricey, they make it up with generous-sized portions.
The daily soup was a pork bone, soybean and soy sheet soup. The soup was rich and flavourful with a hint of sweetness from the carrots. It was so good I had 4 bowls to myself! The salt-baked chicken was soft and tender, and the tung choy was done nicely with the leaves still being bright and green. My favourite dish of the night was definitely the scrambled eggs with prawns. The prawns were fresh and snappy, and the eggs were creamy and full of flavour.
This place is now on my list of places to go when I am craving some homecooked food.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Bella C.Riley Park, Vancouver, Canada20237100Aug 15, 2021
Great spot for late night eats (SIU YEH).
This place serves authentic Chinese food and has super affordable late nights prices. Come after 9pm for their cheaper prices to try a variety of dishes.
My favourites include:
deep fried pork intestine - super crispy with a beautiful chee
Black bean clam - flavourful and the clams were HUGE
Bring CASH , they are cash only. The restaurant can get super busy so be ready to waitHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 1
