As a Washington resident who works for a Canadian company, I had heard from my Canadian counterparts how wonderful the sushi was in Vancouver. When I decided to spend the weekend up there last month, I knew that sushi was going to have to be one of my meals out.
After searching on Yelp to find reasonably-priced sushi off Robsen Street, my friends and I settled on Momo Sushi House. While it was understated inside, I knew that this place was all about the sushi after eying the plates of my fellow diners. Always the indecisive one, I decided to share 4 different rolls with one of my friends so we could have a taste of everything.
Now, to the good stuff -- the food. Although I can't remember every item we ordered, what I can say is that one roll stuck out to me for sure, and that was the Crunchy Roll. I am used to a crunchy roll being covered in some sort of tempura batter and deep friend, but this was one a whole other, monumental level. Instead of deep frying this dream sequence of a sushi roll, they rolled it into a magical, crunchy mixture that I could only closely identify as a mix between Doritos and Fritos. Don't be fooled though, there is no way that is what it was. As a whole, the roll just evoked the same salty, tangy crunch that comes with devouring a bag of chips.
Overall, the service was slow, but that doesn't hinder me from giving Momo 5 stars. Once we did get served though, the service was attentive, but not overbearing. I can't wait to venture over to Canada again soon, primarily to eat sushi from Momo!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 14, 2023
Let's get real. You can't expect a Mercedes when you're dishing out for a Kia (no offence to Kia).
Their affordable price point is appreciate it, but you do pay for it. If you're a sushi lover you will certainly pay in terms of the lack of flavour, taste and quality. I ordered three different rolls and oddly enough they all tasted the same.
The bag which I paid for came torn and leaking and the wasabi and ginger was meshed all together?! (see pic). I'm not sure what was up with the Miso Soup, it had a strange aftertaste and I had one sip and garbaged the rest.
If you're a sushi lover like I am skip this place. The difference in price is not worth it. If you're not, then you'll be relieved when you get your bill, as it is one of the cheapest Sushi places in Vancouver.
Quality vs. $......your choice.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 18, 2023Updated review
All these years later this little hole in the wall spot continues to do pretty good, steady business (though much of it is to-go). It's still a very small space, so if there's more than 3-4 couples/groups dining in, you'll need to wait for a table or get food to go.
It remains a (Canadian-)cash/debit only place. I'm from the US and always get CAD ahead of visiting Vancouver specifically to visit this place. It's one of my favorites.
The portions are sizable but fairly affordable and solid quality compared to similar places elsewhere. I only need to order about four rolls for it to be a big, full meal.
Also, they start you with a house soup that's not miso but the broth is udon-like, no noodles, spicy with a bit of scallions, and there's no spoon so you drink it like a tea.
I still really like this place whenever I visit Vancouver, and still visit quite a few times every time I'm in town. It's an out of the way and semi-hidden spot off Robson on Bidwell, but if they've got seats and you've got (Canadian) cash, it's a great and affordable place to have some sushi.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 10, 2022Previous reviewDecided to update this review years later. Thankfully they remain open and doing pretty good, steady business (though much of it is to-go). It's still a very small space, and plexiglass separates diners thanks to the whole Covid thing.
It is still a cash/debit only place. The portions have since gotten bigger, and in turn the price did increase a bit, but it's still very affordable compared to similar places elsewhere. Still, now I only need to order about four rolls for it to be a big, full meal (before it was more like 6-7). Quality of the sushi remains quite good.
I can't remember if it was a thing years ago, but now they start you with a house soup that's not miso but is udon-like, spicy, and no spoon so you drink it like a tea.

This tiny place has a counter and two tables inside, but also has two umbrella'd tables outside. The portions aren't massive, but each roll/piece was quite cheap, and was shocked to get two rolls and two nigiri for under $7. At many Seattle places you can't even get a single roll for $7. I expected to pay about $10 for the meal and only owed $6.80. The food was all fresh and the service was friendly, if a bit slow (one counter-person working with a whole kitchen and serving everyone).
You better believe I'll come back the next time I'm in town. - Lonsdale Critic C.North Vancouver, Canada03Dec 7, 2023
Sorry to say but worst sushi I ever had. Toro sashimi was grey and dry. Too scared to eat it. The ginger and wasabi was in a squashed mini paper cup. That was all dried up too. Looked like it sat in the fridge for quite some time. I ordered a couple rolls. Both tools were rolled in really wet rice. My rolls were water logged. I tossed it all in the garbage.

After reading all the reviews about how big the rolls were supposed to be, I was greatly disappointed by the size. It was just regular sized roles. If anything, maybe a little smaller than other cheap sushi places like naruto. Their special rolls were not very creative - seems like the same sauce is used for several rolles and just basic ingredients. The taste was ok but the chopped scallop was fishy. At first the prices seemed great if the rolls were as big as others said, but now that the rolls are smaller, the prices are just a little more expensive than other cheap sushi places.
One thing to note is that there are 3 Momo Sushi and they all hage different menus. I am not sure whether it is a chain or not (but the name is stylized the same). The prices are very different as well. Maybe other Momo sushis are better.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 33150172Jun 23, 2016
LIKES:
- Cheap and good for the price
- Large servings
- The hot Miso soup (? I don't actually know what it is but it's delicious!) served as a default drink in addition to water or tea
DISLIKES:
- Feels "fast-foody" even if you sit down
- Styrofoam plates, paper cups, everything disposable
- Staff doesn't pay too much attention since it is very much a serve yourself once you have your food kind of place - you get up yourself to get water or tea from the tanks on the side
- Tuna and other fish were noticably not that fresh
Overall, the quality of food and service is not the greatest, but for the price and serving size it's not a bad choice.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Barbara S.Vancouver, Canada753112246Feb 20, 2019
My niece was in town from Australia so my sister and I took her and her bestie out for a quick sushi after they did some shopping.
Momo has come recommended by a friend so we decided to try it out.
From the rolls to the gyoza, from the Sunomo salad to the seaweed salad, everything was fresh and delicious and we've all agreed we would go back again!
Good prices plus the staff was so nice and service was impeccable.
Note that they don't take credit cards but debit cards work fine!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
