The modern coffee culture movement has shifted in dozens of directions over the past several years--from small, hipster shops to large-scale, corporate-owned operations, the current era of coffee is both dynamic and unpredictable.
At Nemesis Coffee, in the epicenter of Vancouver's Gastown area, any coffee aficionado should consider a visit to be mandatory on their bucket list. The crew has, in no more than a few short months, delivered everything there is to be celebrated about high-end, artisanal coffee.
After visiting in April of 2017 and discussing a bit of Nemesis' backstory with owner Jess Reno, I walked away stunned by what the team had accomplished. Each and every shot is pulled to perfection on cutting-edge equipment. Baristas are skilled, personable, and top-notch at their craft. Whatever your inclination, you can be sure that the espresso shots, cold brews, and hot coffees will set your new benchmark for what coffee ought to be.
Beyond the main fare, it's worth noting that the food--crafted fresh in house, daily--is nothing short of sensational. Avocado toasts are sublime, complemented by some of the best pastries you'll ever try. Don't just get a drink--explore the menu to see what Nemesis truly has to offer.
In the last decade, coffee culture has seen a rebirth. It's worth celebrating that Nemesis Coffee sets not only a benchmark for Vancouver, but more importantly, a golden standard for all other shops to aspire to reach.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Jun 7, 2024
Came from California and this place was highly recommended and I found out why!
Location: not the biggest space so keep in mind, tables are limited and they're very busy! We managed to keep a table within no wait but we do now once we left others had been waiting a minute.
Service is quick and friendly though! You'll order what you want at the front and they'll take everything to your table once seated.
I had a very delicious breakfast sandwich however the real winner for me was the Strawberry Cruffin! Goddess I could eat 10 of these if I could. I highly recommend getting a cruffin! 100/10.
My friends enjoyed their food as well, my friend highly recommend their Matcha Ube Latte.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ian C.Redwood Shores, Redwood City, CA13714619Jul 22, 2024
We came here on a Sunday mid-morning where the area was dead but the coffee shop was busy. It was a line out the door where we were not allowed to take any seats until we ordered and the cashier will assign you with seating if you're dining in. We didn't know so they told us that immediately with a bit of an attitude.
The vibe was a modern hippy style where the staff was hit or miss. If you weren't someone they cared to chat with, they kept it minimal. No smiles.
They did have a kitchen in the back to make the simple breakfast options but we only got a few coffee and a cowboy cookie which was massive.
Drinks:
Matcha Ube latte with Oatmilk wasn't spectacular to be better than every other place in Vancouver serving it.
Honduras Rene Fernandes was distinctive pour over - had good flavors and was decently strong; I was content with it for my primary drink (black only).
Ice Hot Cocoa - accommodated us adding iced for the kids and it was rich and sweet. It was just right!
Iced Americano - they didn't have any cold brew, so they suggested this which was well made for anyone needing something cold and the strength of a good ol' caffeine.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 30, 20241 check-in
This place did not disappoint. Regardless of how long the lines were to order and be seated, they were moving fairly quickly.
Restaurant is very clean and great service. They were SO busy at this location but service was top notch.
Variety of pastries to choose from. They have a great selection of coffee and breakfast items.
I could not resist the tiramisu croissant! It was so good. Inside was infused with coffee and top had mascarpone cream which complemented the yummy fluffy croissant. Do not share this
Green hash was simple yet filling. Came with veggies, greens and poached egg. Green sauce was good.
Lattes were yum. Not watered done made with good coffee beans.
They have seatings inside and outside. No reservations and you have to order to be seated.
Highly recommend this place.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 915741434Jun 17, 2024
I got their TIRAMISU CROISSANT (3/5), the croissant almost felt a day old, softer and not flaky buttery fresh. Decent filling, wish it had more coffee flavour. I did hear lots of good things about their mortadella cheese egg croissant sandwich, but didn't get to try it this time!
I also tried the PORK BELLY EGGS BENNY (4/5) super good, definitely indulgent and saucey. The BREAKFAST SANDWICH (3.5/5) was a little sad looking compared to the plating of the other dishes. But overall tasty, just nothing blowing it out of the park.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 35763May 3, 2024
There was a line when I went, but it went by fast enough. The service upon entering is very friendly, however when I needed assistance, they were hard to call over. The cafe itself is a cool aesthetic. The ceiling is especially unique with its dome shape. Now as for the food, here are my ratings below:
Tiramisu croissant: 3.5/5
Eggs Benedict: 4/5
Bodega: 3.5/5
Mortadella: 5/5
Pretty good overall! I would definitely come back for that Mortadella sandwich and to try their other items!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jun 29, 2024
Wonderful breakfast options and delicious coffee drinks. Modern fine with creative twists on items ( eg the avocado toast had toasted sesame seeds and nuts which was quite delicious). Husband was quite pleased with his green eggs and hash which was a poached egg onto of some fresh green vegetables with roasted pots ( think brussel sprouts and green beans ). My only complaint is that oak milk was the only milk substitute option for my latte ( which by the way was delicious so I will overlook that almond milk was not an option. Recommend!

Nemesis coffee was the first place i wanted to visit as soon as I arrived in Vancouver.
Went around the afternoon and it was packed to the max! Outside was cold and inside was super warm. There were no windows open and it was so stuffy. Not even the AC was on or anything. Luckily they had tables outside to sit.
They no longer sell the cruffins anymore.... or had those spiral croissants (by the time I was there) which is heart breaking. I settled for the cinnamon pastry which was a great option! Asked for it to be warmed up and it was perfect. They call out your order outside as well which I appreciated.
Their restrooms are super tiny, but they have 2. Service was amazing. The only reason why Im giving 3 stars is because it was super stuffy which was off putting when waiting in line, and they sold out of the spiral croissants/no longer sell cruffins...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 4, 2024
Got here just after 12p and there was a short line. Service was okay, they were very busy and I noticed the employees attitudes seemed overwhelmed and over it.
We sat in a corner with a Chai & Matcha latte with oat milk, they were not the best but the croissants were the reason we came so we got a pear and a chocolate croissant, both of which were underwhelming (see photos of amount of chocolate inside the danish)
It was not worth the hype for us.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
