Premium sashimi ingredients, ready all-day for your next DIY sushi date!!
...no, I didn't make these, but you can drop by Sashimiya for your next sushi fix!
Located on Hornby, between Drake St and Pacific St, Sashimiya is a quaint and convenient shop selling Japanese snacks, delicious to-go sushi, and premium sushi ingredients. Started by Chef Taka Omi, formerly from the Fairmont Vancouver, he wanted Sashimiya to be an accessible place for any aspiring sushi chef. Luckily, for people like me, he also sells sushi to-go, for all your sushi cravings.
During my visit, my girlfriend and I picked up a few boxes to share. The sashimi plate was definitely the star of the show. It offers some classics, like salmon and tuna, but also has a few slices each of hamachi, saba, and ika! We also got their assorted nigiri plate and an aburi salmon roll. We were concerned that the rice would be too hard since it had been sitting in their fridge, but it was totally fine! Everything tasted great except for the uni. Not sure why, but it tasted particularly fishy, but everything else was . You definitely get the value that you pay for!!
If you're ever in the area, I'd highly recommend you swinging by to check out Sashimiya. Whether you end up buying some sushi, or some other Japanese snacks or treats, you can be sure it'll be quality stuff!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Apr 21, 2024
A small little special local grocer that is authentically Japanese has popped up on the West End. My friend showed this to me on the day where we were just walking around for a light lunch in the area. I love where it's located and that it is so convenient that it is right here in the west end.
The cool thing is that you can buy a slice of fish and then ask the chef behind the glass to help cut the fish for you! It is so cool. All the meat they have are sashimi grade too and they are all instantly edible if you want. On top of that, they have a menu where you can order which is quite affordable. My plan is to order a couple of party platters and bring them to a house party in the future. It sounds so easy and it will be a great plan.
I walked out with a chirashi bowl that day, and I needed to eat it as I was extremely hungry. They had a small seating area outside of the store to sit as well. A bench and a small little garden. Really this store you can pass by it without realizing it was right there. It is one of those hidden gems within the West End.
Next time I'll be back with orders for the party trays and maybe here for some fish heads or groceries for the week! Love coming to these little authentic little grocers!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 14, 2024
Spent over $90 on several different sashimis in the fridge. They were not fresh. When I got home and opened it, it smelled a bit fishy. We couldn't eat more than a few pieces and threw away the rest.
I see the fantastic reviews for pre-ordering for pickup so it's made fresh to order, which I'd consider trying in the future.
I just won't be picking up anything from their fridge again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 1225111May 23, 2024
Beautiful, high quality, authentic sushi. We ordered takeout for Mother's day and Sashimiya was able to accommodate our lunchtime order for a party tray + 2 chirashi bowls by calling an hour in advance. The fish and rice texture were comparable to the sushi I had at Tetsu Sushi Bar! Each nigiri had the wasabi/yuzu/extra toppings incorporated according to the taste of each fish, like they do in traditional Japanese restaurants. My favourite out of the tray was definitely the aburi. Smoky flavour and melt in your mouth texture with the rice.

Remains a great spot for sushi and Japanese ingredients and goodies. I got their nigiri special for $15 - it was so good! The fish and uni were particularly fresh and the rice had a good texture.

The store is a little small and tucked away, but offers a great selection. I headed straight to their fridge to grab some lunch. I had my eye set on the premium chirashi don ($23.95) but there was a regular one for $14.95. The premium chirashi don was absolutely delicious and very affordable for the amount and different types of fresh seafood and sashimi.

Eater Vancouver doesn't disappoint.
A small takeaway only shop selling a limited amount of Japanese pantry staples, snacks, dried ramen, and incredible fresh chirashi bowls, nigiri sushi and and sashimi created by a seasoned sushi chef.
It's not just any seafood either. All of it from sustainable fisheries (something heard again and again from our more eco friendly friends up north).
The basics:
- Rice - Short grain, gently seasoned so as not to overpower the seafood.
- Seafood - uber fresh. Treated simply. Generous cuts.
Two rolls stand out; "salmon aburi" and "gokujo". The first, made from the outstanding salmon from the province, topped with rich salmon, slathered with motoyaki sauce (kewpie mayo, mirin, lemon juice, sugar) before being heavily torched. The second, a huge maki roll made of various fish and pickles. Both hefty and good eats.
The post brunch snack quality was solid enough that it warranted an uber eats follow up for dinner. The premium chirashi (chef's selection of in season fish including up end offerings like uni) a delicious cornucopia of fresh seafood goodness at a bargain price of $25CAD. Back it up by even more sashimi (chef's choice) from a large sashimi plate, $54CAD with more heavenly salmon for good measure.
Note: Individual types of sashimi can be ordered and platters customized if visiting the shop.
It's not fancy but it is a great way to enjoy the seafood of the area as simply as possible at a very fair price.
Impressive takeaway.Helpful 22Thanks 5Love this 19Oh no 0 - Nov 3, 2023
Found this place on Instagram. I made an order at the counter for 2 sushi boxes and it took 20 minutes to get ready. We also picked up a few things from the fridge. The quality of the seafood was really good. Steady flow of people coming in to pick up food from the fridge. It's so close to the beach. We picked up our food and reached the beach to enjoy our lunch. Highly recommend if you want to pick up items to DIY sushi at home or order something to take to the beach.

After my other favorite place for Aburi closed, this place has become one of my favorites in downtown, it is authentic. I get the salmon Aburi and it's delicious. It's close to our work so very easy to order and pick up as there is no where to sit, take out only. Highly recommend if you like torched sushi.

$50 Medium combo - 4x octopus, sweet shrimp, tuna, salmon, mackerel, yellowtail, and (striped bass?). Overall very fresh, light on flavor, good value (tho the pieces a touch on the thinner side). No complaints tho, would come again!
