Do they still sell Ruis Finnish Rye Bread? I'm coming to NYC next month and would like to pick some up.

      A:

A number of Greenmarket bakers sell rye bread, but the Nordic rye baker that sold the Ruis Finnish Rye Bread no longer sells at Greenmarket.

I'm not sure why Union Square Greenmarket is so popular because you can probably grab equal at most supermarkets. Even at the Wholefoods down the street or the Trader Joe's even a bit further down the road. I can only deduce the support the farmers that come from upstate and beyond directly concept, it's a big open space, and the whole outdoor scene thing to escape chain markets.

The mix of retailers change but there are the consistent like a few of these retailers of jam, bread, baked goods, lightly off the main market meat and the lot of the farmers selling their vegetables and fruits. Other than the mentioned, today there was honey, maple syrup, wheatgrass from the Grassroot Man in our local city's Brooklyn area, tea, herbs, cheese and liquor being sold today.

It was a nice stroll today, even without the sun. They weren't there yesterday when it rained and the outdoor market is not always there. By around 5pm some are packing up.

The price range is only a little higher than you would find at the supermarket. For example, you can get a head of cauliflower elsewhere for $2 and maybe some change but the farmers at Union Square Greenmarket has them at $4 a head. I am not complaining at all because it's worth the price for direct from the farm purchasing. After all they took the time to grow, produce or make what they sell.

Not to mention the stuff I have bought in the past in the numerous visits at the market.

To be more specific: I was in the market for some cabbage. So, looking around at the 5 or so farmers. I chose to buy some purple cabbage from a Van Houten farms. I spoke with the seller for a minute and he was nice. Mountain Sweet Berry Farm I believe is the name of the farm that sell potatoes and they have bags and sample of chips. They are often there. Hey! go support them spud growers. Those Magic Molly breed of potatoes cost $4 a bag and 3 bags for $10. Natural, clean tasting, without after taste or any taste besides a light potato and light oil fried taste. The had a mix of colorful potatoes I believe they called Fruity Pebbles. Sometimes I see Beth's or another name but today I tried Hawthorne Marmalade. I liked it. It wasn't as if some rookie mashed so fruit and added sugar. You could taste the fruit and tasted like, well, marmalade. Sycamore Farms was there today selling baskets of golf ball tomatoes, mmm, fresh and pop of toe-mae-toe. I was going to buy a Gould but the farm I saw there a day ago was not there today. I had my eye on one specific one he was selling, nothing else.

This is not the end or last visit. To be continued another shopping day...

This was my first time shopping at the Union Square Greenmarket. My friends posted pictures from this market on social media and that made me want to go and check it out. I shopped here this past Saturday and had a great time. There were so many vendors/ stands selling honey, mint iced tea, organic vegetables and fruits and flowers.

I bought a small basket of purple potatoes for $6-7 and one bunch of Amaranths for $6 from Luna Family Farms. They look so good in my place. I'm looking forward to shopping here again so I can support these farmers.

Every vendor I visited was helpful and explained all of the prices. The service was great. I wish it was a bit more organized but other than that, I loved walking to all of the stands and checking out what they were selling.

Lots fresh vegetables, flowers, bakery items you can get here. Got a brownie in Knead Love Bakery. Not gonna lie, a little pricy ($9) but wow super rich flavor. I'm overloaded with cocoa after that brownie.

Ladies were very helpful and nice. They take Apple Pay.

For those who absolutely appreciate markets, a trip to the Union Square Greenmarket is highly recommended. Fresh veggies, baked goods, plants, and flowers from multiple sellers are available.

The vendor selling lavender was especially kind and spoke about the advantages of each lavender infused item. She also sold soaps, lavender bags, and a beautifully crafted, visually stunning lavender-infused eye mask - which I purchased. Plant and garden enthusiasts will adore the square's miniature nursery. For people who love markets and want to see a wide selection of plants and flowers, this market is a must-visit.

If you are in the area and appreciate markets, definitely check out the Union Square Greenmarket.

Union Square Greenmarket is, in my opinion, the best and most consistent farmers market I've been to over the years. The vendors are always knowledgeable, friendly, affable and professional. This is the only place I know of where you can get Tremblay Apiaries LLC honey aside from traveling upstate to Van Etten. This is my all time favorite honey! Tea sold at the market is also really good. The Greenmarket is definitely a cool place to stroll around any time of the year. There are lots of unique, interesting options regardless of what you're into.

I may be biased, considering my apartment is a mere three-minute walk from Union Square and I used to pass by every day for many years on my commute to/from work. In my experience, this is as good as farmers markets get on the east coast.

Admittedly, we don't have the variety of fruits and vegetables that my parents do at their weekly farmers market in La Jolla. Of all of the greenmarkets I've visited throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Union Square location's open most days of the week, with Saturdays being their flagship market.

My personal faves include mushroom from Bulich Farms, Knoll Krest's eggs and pastas, and PE & DD Seafood's sea scallops. I also regularly snag pork butts from Roaming Acres (go early; they routinely sell out) and huge cuts of brisket from Grazin' Angus to throw in my sous vide.

Although the greenmarket's open year-round, it really flourishes in the warmer seasons. Beginning in late spring, ramps show up. My friends now tease me mercilessly around this time of year, because they know as soon as those wild spring onions pop up, I can't stop gushing about them for weeks. Summer brings out decadently sweet peaches; crisp, refreshing watermelon; and bountiful heirloom tomatoes. You're pretty limited on fresh veg in the winter, but carrots and root vegetables make for great roasts along with the high quality meats.

Plus, the Greenmarket team does a phenomenal job at programming. I haven't intentionally attended any events, but they routinely put on cooking demos, book signings, and more. Whoever's handling their social media must be inspired.

Last, but not least, I make a weekly stop to pitch my compost at this location. The LES Ecology Center has a food scrap dropoff site here every day the market's open and I probably shave off 50% of my total household garbage by freezing and composting my coffee grounds, eggshells, and more.

In short, the greenmarket is probably my favorite perk of living in the neighborhood and Union Square is so much richer for its presence!

Can't believe that I never wrote about my favorite green market in New York. Well here I am.

Union Square is the largest outdoor green market in the city with an abundance of local farmers, nurseries, and purveyors of fresh organically grown produce, raw delicious cheeses, artisanal fresh baked goods, cured and fresh meat, seafood, pickles, jams, local honey, maple syrup, seasonal cut flowers and plants.

During peak season there can be as many as 140 producers represented.

**Most are cash only, a few take credit/debit cards (do check their website, below) **

***The market is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays from 8AM to 6PM**

My favorite green market in all of NYC. Farm to table freshness from fruits, veggies, flowers.

Strolling this market just give me a happy feeling even if i just end up buying a piece of freshly made bread, or a bottle of juice.

If you're like me, that love markets then this place is worth a visit.

Union Square Greenmarket is such a great place to get fresh produce and artisan goods. The vendors are very knowledgeable about their products and you can find some of the best qualities and deals right here.

What's unique is that they're open year round and not just on weekends! They're open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 6pm! This is so awesome especially since so many other markets are open for a very limited time and season. This is an incredible market to get your local fruits, vegetables, flowers, treats, art and handmade jewelry. There was a vendor who made art from recycled materials and that was very nice to see.

Overall, this market encompasses all that one may need as far as fresh produce and a fun time!
