Andrea’s 5-star review: I usually don't sleep very well at hotels, but I slept like a baby here. This boutique hotel offered one of the loveliest and most peaceful experiences I've had in a long time. The bed inside my modern decorated room was oh so comfortable and the bathroom was amazing! I may have been the cleanest person in Vancouver because I couldn't help, but take a few extra showers in their incredible shower. Their large gym was full of new equipment and I had it pretty much to myself, except for just one other guest who complained guests didn't do a good job of wiping off the equipment after they used it. We may have different hotel gym standards back in the good old US, but it looked pretty clean to me! They also have a nice bar and restaurant downstairs called Voya. I arrived absolutely famished (as always) and was very pleased with the cheese plate and nachos from the restaurant. I planned on going back for more nachos since they'd make a great late night snack, but I ran out of time. Fortunately, I have a feeling I'll be back soon! -
Andrea’s 3-star review: From the second my hostess with the mostess, Crystal H, picked me up from the airport I had poutine on the brain. Crystal made good on her promise to get me some poutine by taking me to La Bella Patate, which has over 30 different kinds. My, oh my! Some of them looked tempting, but I decided to stick with the traditional. I also asked if they had a side salad to go with it, but the guy behind the counter chuckled and told me "we're not really a salad kind of place." And so I decided to also split a grilled cheese sandwich with SF's own Tiffany C because I couldn't just eat fries for lunch. Right? My traditional poutine was smothered in gravy and cheese curds. I was in poutine heaven after just a few bites, although after a few more bites the heaviness of the dish made me a bit nauseous. I'm sure I'll be wanting more poutine when in town next time, although not sure I'll get my very own serving. It seems like it's better suited to be split among a big group...and would make a fantastic late night snack. And if you're wondering it turns out they made a tasty grilled cheese here as well. -
Andrea’s 5-star review: Obsessed! I kinda wanted to move in, which I think our waiter may have feared since we were there for a very long time. Apparently their menu changes daily so be sure to check their website ahead of time or sign up for their emails, although I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with anything here. Our fabulous waiter made our dining experience extra special; I sure wish I could remember his name! He suggested some tasty looking wines for my non-pregnant dining companions and even whipped up a virgin cocktail for me. It was so good that I asked several times if he could confirm there wasn't any alcohol in there...and apparently there wasn't. After devouring a few baskets of soft, warm bread...dipped in oil and Hawaiian sea salt (um, yum) we split a lentil soup with pork in it. The chef was kind enough to divide the soup among 3 bowls and it was the perfect amount of food. As for my main entrée I got the pasta with squid in it. As much as I love the idea of their menu changing daily they may need to make this one a staple because it was one of the best pasta dishes I've ever eaten. And being a carboholic I've sure had my share of good pasta! I was absolutely stuffed, but couldn't resist ordering the chocolate torte so I could have just 1 bite. My 1 bite turned into eating the entire dessert, but I just couldn't help myself. I may have not done a very good of sharing dessert with my dining companions, but they seemed quite content with their cheese platter, which unfortunately included mostly brie and blue cheeses (no-nos while pregnant). We have our fair share of good dining in Chicago, but I'm sure jealous of all the Vancouverites for having this gem of a restaurant. -
Andrea’s 3-star review: Our dining choices were pretty limited in this mall and East seemed like a much better option than anything we could find in the food court. I ordered a rather large bowl of won ton soup (I could only eat about of it) and the veggie fried rice. The rice was also a very large portion so I'm guessing everything here is supposed to be served family style. I ate a ton of it, but only managed to get halfway thru it. And technically I am eating for a family of 2 these days. While it wasn't the best Chinese food I've ever had, it did the trick of filling us up before we had to work a big bash. Their prices are also super reasonable and you can get a ton of food for their special in the $8 range. Crazy! I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but would definitely stop in again if I was hungry and shopping in this mall. It sure beats any of the food court options.

Andrea’s 4-star review: I had time for just 1 last breakfast before leaving Vancouver (tear) and Crystal H suggested one of her favorites: Cafe Medina. The restaurant is rather small, but I was still surprised to see a bit of a wait on a Friday morning. Apparently this is a very popular spot! I had been warned that the Vancouver airport can take awhile to get thru (& yes, the rumors are true) so we were in a bit of a rush. We immediately placed an order for lavender lattes, hard boiled eggs, waffles (their specialty) and a bowl of fruit. The food didn't come out as fast as we would have liked, but that's prob more of our fault for being in a hurry. The lavender latte was perfectly sweet, just how I like my coffee. I loved how the egg came in a little egg holder- we don't see much of that back in Chicago! The fruit was fresh and made me feel better about all the fattening stuff (um, poutine!) I had been eating in Vancouver. However, the waffle was the highlight of the meal. They have lots of different sauces to choose from, but I opted for the chocolate raspberry. So delish that I ended up dipping my fruit in it as well. So much for the fruit being healthy, but had to indulge during my last Vancouver meal. -
Andrea’s 5-star review: You don't need to be a vegetarian to enjoy the deliciousness of Acorn. I consider myself a pescatarian, although I do indulge in the occasional piece of chicken or even a burger. I usually wouldn't choose to eat at a vegetarian restaurant, but when I go back to Vancouver I'll be putting Acorn on the top of my list. I ate at Acorn with a group of colleagues. The menu was set ahead of time and we were lucky enough to try a variety of apps, entrees and desserts. Everything, truly everything was amazing. I don't think you can go wrong with ordering anything off this menu. The service was also unbelievable. We got VIP treatment from the minute we sat down until they had to practically roll us out of the restaurant from so much delish vegetarian food. Based on my limited time in Vancouver it appears they have many incredible restaurants to choose from, but it would be a shame to skip Acorn if visiting..even for those carnivores. -
Andrea’s 5-star review: You've gotta be careful where you get your raw fish in Chicago so pretty sure I would never venture into a place that was called Sushi Mart or even looked this casual back home. However, I was all about it in Vancouver...well at least the veggie rolls thanks to the baby in the belly. Thanks to the "order at the counter" system this makes for a quick & affordable lunch spot. They have a few communal tables. I was worried that my large party wouldn't be able to find enough seats and being famished I wanted my sushi NOW rather than having to take it back to work, but the tables turned rather quickly. As I mentioned above I just got veggie rolls, which may sound boring, but everything was so fresh and delicious. I still was a bit jealous of my colleague's raw fish so I'll definitely be jumping on that train the next time I"m back in Vancouver. In fact, I may eat here everyday for lunch the next time I'm back in Vancouver. This sushi fanatic was quite impressed! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: The red buddha men all over this hotel kinda freaked me out at first, but I grew fond of them after a few days...and was actually sad to say farewell to them before heading back to Chicago. When I arrived at the hotel after midnight I was not only greeted by these red buddha men, but 2 friendly guys at the desk. They informed me that I was being upgraded to the honeymoon suite- whoo hoo! When I first entered the room my first thought was "this is not where I'd want to spend my honeymoon" based on the dated decor, but it was spacious and comfortable...and perfect for my 2 night work trip. I didn't spend very much time in my "honeymoon suite," but my colleagues and I did make ourselves at home in the conference room. They provided a delish breakfast and great service throughout our stay as well. The Listel is also centrally located and there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. While it wasn't the most luxurious hotel experience, I'd be open to staying here again for the right price.
