Issabelle’s 5-star review: If you love delicious breakfast (and lunch) choices and don't mind waiting in a 45+ minute line, then Jam is the spot for you! Once you are seated, you are greeted with friendly servers and a mouth-watering menu to decide from. Lots of different savory and sweet choices. All the portions are generous and make for great leftovers. I really love the Charlie bowl (because leftovers) and have only really gotten that and the pulled pork sandwich. If you enjoy caesars, Jam has the best caesars in town. If you like bacon, you'll love their sugar coated bacon garnish! -
Issabelle’s 5-star review: I love Deacon's small old school dinner feel. The energy and friendliness you feel right when you walk through the door are contagious. No matter how busy it is, the staff always make sure to acknowledge and communicate with you. I've tried a few items on the menu including: Breakfast: Chocolate chip pancakes French toast with compote Little carolina pulled pork pancakes Gastown breakfast Lunch: Pesto mac & cheese Crispy chicken wrap (amazing!!!) I have never been disappointed by any of my choices. Impressed with how quickly the food came out despite how busy it is on weekend mornings. Always blown away by the service - staff were attentive, quick and very friendly! -
Issabelle’s 5-star review: Another day, another reason for brunch. After reading the reviews about this place I was sold. I was expecting the place to be packed, but when my boyfriend and I got there, it was empty. Not a single table seated. My first thought was "were the reviews wrong?" But that quickly changed the second we were greeted and sat. Our server came in and brought us coffee almost immediately. The menu has your typical breakfast foods, but with a bit of a fusioned twist. I can't really explain what that fusion is, but it's just different. Go check it out, and you'll understand what I mean. Our server was so awesome - friendly, chatty and very helpful. He offered some good recommendations one of them being the coffee crusted pork belly hash (which my boyfriend got), but I decided to be boring and stick to the hangry breakfast (eggs, maple sausage, bacon, sourdough toast, hashbrowns). Since we were the only ones there at the time he took our order our food came out pretty quickly. The portions were huge. Well worth the $15, for sure. Our server brought over some of their house "sweet-ass hot sauce" and it was delicious! If you're a fan of spice, definitely ask for their hot sauce! My meal was so big that I had to give the rest of my food to the bf. Bless his soul. I had a bite of his meal though and I have to mention how good it was - defintiely not bitter, as you would think with coffee. I can see how it can get packed on weekends though, so I'm going to do what we did this time and come here on a weekday morning. If you're planning on checking this place out, I'd recommend doing the same! -
Issabelle’s 4-star review: Well for starters, the food is great! The hostess stand is right at the front, and there was someone there to greet and seat me right away. Since I was by myself, I sat at a small little table. I wish I was more hungry when I went because everything (especially the sandwiches) looked delicious *heart-eyed emoji*. I decided to go for the yogurt and fruit parfait with a side of bacon. The parfait also came with a side of cinnamon toast, and if you've never had cinnamon toast (not the cereal!) before... COME HERE. I've had this weird craving for cinnamon buns recently, and the toast kicked that craving right out of the water. If you aren't a fan of cinnamon, don't worry, there are still plenty of good options for you! Service was good! My waitress was very attentive, quick and friendly. When it's time to pay, you need to go to the front and pay up there. I'll definitely be back, but with a bigger appetite. -
Issabelle’s 4-star review: I think I've mastered the art of coming to brunch places and being sat right away. Tip: come after 1. That's what I did once again on a fine Tuesday afternoon, and upon walking in I was able to choose a table of my choice. I picked a cute little table right by the window (and by the heater). The server was very quick and brought me a cup of coffee right away. Bonus points. I waited for my brunch date to join me and took the time to examine the menu. There are so many good options here that it was hard to choose! What really surprised me was how intriguing their lunch menu looked (specifically the crispy chicken sandwich). I'm usually more of a breakfast food kind of girl, and the fact that their lunch menu had me looking away from their breakfast side was impressive. I ended up choosing the bacon and avocado eggs benny (big surprise), and it was SO. GOOD. What I really enjoyed about this dish was that the avocados were mashed up, guac style, so that it made for even distribution. Coffee was delicious, food was delicious, service was great. Will definitely be back. -
Issabelle’s 5-star review: It's been over a year and a half since I wrote my review on Jam and since then I've still loved coming here. I take all my friends from out of town here. I wait in the lines just so I can have their candied bacon garnished caesar and amazingly delicious, food coma-worthy charlie bowl. I don't care if you think the line is stupid or if you think this is over-rated, I just love Jam so freaking much. A few notes since my last review: + They have now opened up a new location in Kitsilano. + Their candied bacon is still the best bacon in the city. + Their eggs benedict, chicken and french toast, and pancakes are also winners in my book. + They have lunch features that are great as well - I'd recommend the mac n cheese grilled cheese, the king chicken sandwich, or the buffalo blue sandwich. If you're looking for something lighter then, the big jam salad is the bomb.com! + Service is always spectacular - shout out to the wonderful servers who get people in and out quickly with never making us feel rushed. I think I am officially in a relationship with this brunch hot spot. They have my heart forever. -
Issabelle’s 4-star review: 4 stars for cute, modern decor, tasty brunch options, and some dang good french press coffee. It seems that sit-down brunch places aren't a huge thing in Lonsdale quite yet. So that makes Table 153 pretty special, since they're one of the only ones in the area who offers a full sit down breakfast. It was my colleague's last day in Vancouver and we wanted to grab breakfast before everyone went their separate ways. I found Table 153 thanks to Yelp because it was about a 5-minute walk from where we were all staying. This spot isn't hard to miss - located on the up and coming Lonsdale Ave. Plenty of street parking available, if you choose to drive. We walked in and were sat a table right away. Not very many tables available. There were about 3 other tables and a long communal table. It looked like there was an upstairs, but I'm not 100% sure if that is a seating area. My colleague and I got a large french press coffee to share while my other two colleagues got orange juice. Props to Table 153 for serving their orange juice in crates and not those wimpy small glasses. For food, I got the four cheese omelette and added spinach inside. The rest of my table got the crab cake bennies, which they all seemed to enjoy. We also got the nutella french toast for everyone to share. We were hungry, and definitely went to town on our dishes. The service was spot on and we felt very taken care of. Overall, it was a great way to start the morning. If I'm in the North Van neighbourhood soon, I'll definitely come by for another visit. -
Issabelle’s 5-star review: I came here for brunch with my mom and brother on a Sunday afternoon and was expecting to have to wait a long time for a table. To our surprise, we were able to snag a table right by the window overlooking the marina immediately. They have an assortment of breakfast dishes, but they only serve them before 1pm. After that they switch to their lunch menu. I loved seeing how many healthy brunch items they had. I decided to go for the Healthy Belly Filler which had a spinach salad w/ cherry tomatoes, parm, strawberries, and balsamic reduction, plus avo toast w/ a poached egg and smoked salmon. It was healthy and it was filling alright. My mom got the crispy pork belly sandwich and my brother got the bacon cream pasta. They both loved their orders. To split, my brother and I got the truffle mac and cheese. I do have to say that this was probably the best mac and cheese I've ever had. If you love truffle, then you definitely need to get this. I saw that some reviews talked about poor service, but that was not the case for us at all. Plus about this spot, is that there is plenty of street parking right out front. Would definitely come back here again! -
Issabelle’s 5-star review: Amazing, amazing, amazing brunch in White Rock. If you've been following me on Yelp for a while now, then you already know my profound love for all things brunch. The Wooden Spoon is definitely in my top 5 favourite brunch restaurants in the Lower Mainland. If I lived closer to White Rock, guaranteed I'd be here a lot more. Although, it is good for my belly and wallet. I've come to The Wooden Spoon numerous times now and every experience has been awesome. I think there is some sort of unwritten rule where all brunch restaurants 1) have to have cool, funky decor and 2) be warm, cozy, and inviting. This spot is no different. The decor reminds me of a modern, rustic, farmhouse - plenty of wooden tables, wooden slats on the walls, the bar is made out of wood - you get it, they got lots of wood decor. Food-wise, I've gotten a few things and have loved all of them: + SoCal Benny (I can't remember what was on here, but it had pulled chicken and was served on a cheddar corn bread and it was so so so good!) + Harvest Bowl (bowl of chickpea fritters + veggies) + The Sweet & Salty (french toast - it was freaking delicious. I don't need to say anything else.) + Poutine (I have never met a poutine I didn't like, this one is no different) + Banana bread & yogurt (I've never seen this anywhere else, and I loved it. I believe it is also served with a side of maple butter. Slather that bad boy all over the banana bread and you're set) + Chicken and waffles (Drooling just thinking about it) They also have delicious caesars that come with some fun garnishes. I tried their Spoon Caesar and this came with an onion ring and piece of bacon #win. Service has always been super friendly. All the servers have made great recommendations and look like they truly enjoy working here. Since this is one of the better brunch spots in White Rock, it does get really busy on weekends. But hey, busy means that they're doing something right. If you're looking for a new brunch spot outside the city - add The Wooden Spoon to your list. Well worth the drive from anywhere in the Lower Mainland. I'll be back soon! Next time, with stretchier pants! -
Issabelle’s 5-star review: OEB just may have slipped into my top 2 fave brunch places in the city (Jam could never move from the #1 spot in my heart). When I think of brunch, I think of beautifully plated, large portions and carb filling dishes. This is exactly what OEB Breakfast Co. is. OEB is originally from Calgary and I have been waiting for them to open up their Vancouver location for the last few months now and I'm so happy that they're finally open! OEB's menu specializes in hearty, carb-filling dishes. A few eye-catching items from their menu: + Artisinal bagel sammy + Every single breakfast poutine dish + Lobster and shrimp crepe + Nutella french toast + Sweet dreams are made of this (French toast stuffed w/ cheesecake) All of this is just a small sample of what looked good and what I would enjoy. I personally tried the "Sweet dreams are made of this" and "Mushroom and Ham crepe". Both were delicious, but I had to go with the sweet dreams as my favourite. You can't beat french toast stuffed w/ cheesecake. I'm usually not a fan of sweet breakfasts, but this one had me sold. The space itself is large, with plenty of seating for small or large parties, and the view of the Seawall is unbeatable. Brunching with delicious food and a great view? Sounds like I'll be back real soon. -
Issabelle’s 5-star review: Jam Cafe by far and (most likely) forever will be my favourite breakfast join in Vancouver/Victoria. I went to university in Victoria so I've been familiar with Jam for the past 8+ years now. This location is the biggest of the 3. I love coming to Jam for a few different reasons: + Consistent, filling, delicious, carb-heavy brunch dishes. You can't go wrong with anything from this menu. A few of my faves that have only gotten better with time: fried chicken benny, pulled pork pancakes, cinnamon swirl pancakes, fried chicken french toast, the three pigs, and the Charlie bowl have consistently remained at the top of my all time fave brunch meals list. + Fun decor and comforting ambiance. All the Jam locations, including this one, have fun decor and wall art scattered throughout the restaurant. I always said that if I wasn't in marketing and events I'd be in interior design and Jam's whole interior design gets my creative visual juices flowing. + Friendly staff. I'm always impressed with Jam's consistently wonderful service. From the hostesses to the servers, all of them look so happy to be there and always provide friendly service. Even though there are lines out the doors usually, I've never once felt rushed to finish my meal or the servers have never seemed irritated with how busy it is. Whenever I have friends visit from out of town, I make an effort to take them to Jam because almost guaranteed it will be a Top 5 brunch experience in their life. -
Issabelle’s 4-star review: 3 reasons why I'm a fan of Fable Diner (not to be confused with Fable Restaurant in Kits - although owned by the same people). 1. They serve an awesome all day breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu. They've got a variety of options - sweet, savoury, you name it. While they call themselves a diner, I think their food is a bit more upscale than that, although still very decently priced. I recently had their west coast toast (basically avocado toast), and it was delicious! Their poutine, hash & eggs, and breakfast plate are all really great options as well. I've also had their chickpea veggie burger, which I was a really big fan of and would definitely order again. I've had a few bites of their fried chicken sandwich and grilled cheese as well, which both I'd order on my own. Needless to say, you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. 2. Their modern, upscale diner concept. Am I in a diner or a fancy restaurant? It's a bit of both. They've got that big diner-like bar right next to the kitchen, but also plenty of seating around the restaurant. Their decor is much more modern, bright, and "Insta-pic" worthy than most diners that I've been to. But hey, I'm not complaining - it's a beautiful restaurant. 3. Convenient location. Among the hustle and bustle of Busy Main St. this spot is easy to find just off of E Broadway and Main. You can easily get here by walking, car or transit. Fable Diner, I'm a fan. See you again soon.
