Dave’s 3-star review:
Okay, so I finally arrived in Chinatown, SF... Aha!! Golden Gate Bakery is open! Ha! They're not on vacay this time! Now's the chance I've been waiting for, for a long time. Gotta snag some of those elusive, famous egg tarts that they're so well known for! Alright, so we stand, and stand, and stand in line for what seems like forever, moving scant inches at a time (or so it seems)! Finally at the counter! Bust out the trusty iPhone to snap a few pics to remember the place by and all of a sudden I see the dreaded "no picture taking inside"! Drats! But hey, I'm in no mood to get scolded by one of those ladies behind the counter and risk being embarrassed to death in front of all those people! Nope, not me!!!
Being that it was just a week or so away from moon festival, the moon cakes were hot items! Old ladies with literally boxes and boxes of them walking out of the shop through the crowd of anxious people! We reach the counter and get our order of tarts. While outside, I see in the showcase, piles of coconut macaroons. I order some of them (four to be exact) and they, IMHO, win me over, not the tarts!! I know my friends will hate on me for saying that, but hey, it's my money! Haha! For those of you who haven't tried them before, get some next time! I really enjoyed them and if you are staying in a hotel like me, the macaroons will definitely last longer than the tarts! I only wish I had gotten more of them... So pick up a dozen or so to take back to your room with you or even to take home. My journey to GG Bakery to have the egg tarts actually got me liking the macaroons a lot more. Don't get me wrong, the tarts are okay, but I found a new reason to come here next time... and I WILL get more of those macaroons, even if I have to fight that line and risk being scolded by those ladies! :) note: Buy minimum of six macaroons... we asked for four, BIG mistake! "I GIVE YOU SIX"!!!, in a very firm tone was the response.. Yikes...Six it is!
