Bex’s 5-star review: I had an ear infection and a sinus infection. I'll start by saying that I have the worst primary care doctor ever. His life must be really awesome because he's always on vacation and/or his office is always closed. I was debating on just going to the ER, but the idea of waiting all day to see a doctor gave me flashbacks of all the other times I waited in that germ infested cesspool of a waiting area. I had seen urgent care places around and decided to see if that was a better option. The trusty Yelp reviews gave CityMD a 5 star rating so I called to make an appointment or at least see how long the wait was going to be. The receptionist must have misunderstood me because she said I'd wait no longer than five minutes. I must not have heard her correctly due to my ear infection. I grabbed my book in anticipation of the long long wait I was about to endure. I walk in to the clean facility and rubbed my eyes. The receptionist was nice and not disgruntled. What the hell was this place?? WHere was I? In less than 5 minutes, my name was called. Um, what? I was taken to a room where someone was waiting to take my temperature and blood pressure. Right as they walked out, the doctor came in. She was really sweet and didn't rush. She got a little weird when I hugged her and thanked her for the whole experience, almost in happyhappyjoyjoy tears. I left thirty minutes later to go get my prescription they had called in for me. ****MAGICAL HIGHLIGHTS: I had called my insurance beforehand to see if they would cover the $125 fee that CITYMD charges and my insurance laughed in my face and said "No, we hate you." As I was leaving CityMD, I took out my wallet and they laughed in my face and was all "No, we love you. We called your insurance and they are going to cover it" BUZZKILLS: Yeah, no. -
Bex’s 3-star review: It breaks my teeny heart to give Null's 3 stars because their produce is always PERFECT (organic, fresh, washed, ginormous, delicious, plentiful, etc.), but seriously, dude? What is with these prices? They are like LOLable. Let's pretend I wanted some perfect produce and, oh yeah, maybe some OJ. Trader Joe's sells organic OJ for 2.99, Whole Foods sells for 3.99, Fairway sells for 5.99, and Gary Nulls 9.99. That OJ better give me abs of steel or something. Who can afford that? I usually treat myself to a few bushels of greens and call it a day. HIGHLIGHTS: All Organic Market, Unique and interesting finds, Juice Bar BUZZKILLS: Prices only a corporate suit could love, friendly yet not very knowledgable staff -
Bex’s 3-star review: This place fell snuggly at the 3 star mark due to the complete ambivalence I feel when I am there. It is one block from where I live and I LOVE COMEDY (who doesn't?), but I rarely go there because of the prices. There's the ticket price, which is like $20 and then the 2 drink minimum plus tip. HIGHLIGHTS: The comedians are ALWAYS hilarious BUZZKILLS: It's like 6 degrees in the place with air vents everywhere (bring your parkas), it is always doing some sort of renovation to the point where I'm afraid something might collapse and crush me to death, it looks like a grandmother designed the place, the prices are absurd -
Bex’s 2-star review: While I appreciate the gesture to create a vegan menu, everything I had was kinda gross in it's own special way. Maybe I just ordered wrong. I got the Vegan Ravioli which tasted like it was frozen and then thawed and then frozen again and then made fun of and then put on my plate. It was gooey and old tasting and kind of tasted like freezer burn. Then I had the vegan cannoli which also had a weird taste to it. The filling was congealed to the point where I had gotten tired of chewing and decided to just spit it out. HIGHLIGHTS: The waiter was hilarious and awesome. BUZZKILLS: Had a weird run-in with Julia Stiles near the bathroom. It was my birthday. Food sucked. -
Bex’s 4-star review: I think the health dept came by and was all "nah yo, no more shenanigans" and shut Tien down until they cleaned up their act (pun very much intended). Well, they did a really good job! They gutted the place and renovated it to look like a little futuristic oasis. Unfortunately, the creepy dungeon bathroom I spoke of in my last review is now for employees eyes only. And there are only community tables, which forces me to curb my otherwise vulgar and insensitive discussions during my meal (im kind of joking). My boyfriend, who HATES garlic/onions/shallots/leeks, etc. is very happy here because they don't use any of those ingredients. I'm a lil butthurt about it tho. The dude at the counter was really nice and thanked me for coming back and seemed very genuine. HIGHLIGHTS: ORGANIC & LOCAL! Get the Crispy King Oyster Mushrooms (They make me want to plummet into a major depression and wallow in them for my only sense of comfort), Very affordable BUZZKILLS: No bathroom, limited seating -
Bex’s 3-star review: If you can get past the frantic service and the occasional overwhelming fishy smell, the food is quite good. It is simple, fresh, and organic. I usually get a big bowl of the hayato soup or the garlic greens. They have a ton of daily specials that are almost always a winner. HIGHLIGHTS: Consistently good food, good specials, organic, healthy BUZZKILLS: Spotty service, small portions, stinky fish -
Bex’s 5-star review: I have recently been going here alot. The food is always so fresh and clean and sometimes the owner makes an appearance and chats with tables. She makes sure everyone is happy and thanks them for their patronage. That is extremely rare and really awesome. HIGHLIGHTS: Sweet Potato Samosas (steamed), Seitan Teriyaki, Penne with tomato ginger sauce, Tempeh Shiitake, etc! BUZZKILLS: no separate vegan fryer, serves fish, service is kinda slow -
Bex’s 1-star review: Ay yi yi. I really hate writing bad reviews, but this place is the worst (for vegans anyway). I went with 4 vegan friends to the one place that is open passed 10pm (vegans apparently turn into a pumpkin after that). We asked about a few things and the waitress was very confused for the most part and ran to the kitchen to clarify some of the veganness of some items. She came back equally confused and so one of my friends simply ordered tea (wah wah). I am on a bit of a health kick, which is a no-no at BAD Burger, but I took my chances. I ordered mushrooms and two sides of steamed spinach. My food came out and my spinach was drowning in what looked like a handful of butter and the spinach consisted of LITERALLY 10 spinach leaves. Yup, I counted. I walked up to our waitress with my plate and was all "So.....I love ya and everything, but really? I said I wanted 2 sides of steamed spinach and this is ....swimming in butter and clearly not even one side" She responded with,"I don't know what steamed looks like...so...." I explained the cooking methods I requested and the one that was used. What a shitshow. I hate wasting food, but gah, I can't rationalize spending 13 dollars on that ish. When it came time to pay, my friend asked for some change to which our waitress replied, "I don't have any. You can go to the bar next door." Wow. SO. In this chick's defense, I did see that on the check that she wrote STEAMED and so the kitchen staff just sucks. And I work at a restaurant, so I know it's not her fault that she doesn't have change. We had to ask the manager why our bill was oddly 2 dollars more than the itemized list added up to. He was confused and didn't know why either. We asked what system the restaurant uses and he shrugged. The girl finally figured out it was the *vegan tax.* Making anything vegan costs a dollar extra! Super Lame. We tipped 20% because that's what servers do and she was friendly and apologized for everything. If I had to work there I would not be nice or sane. -
Bex’s 4-star review: I had Jury Duty in the area and assumed it was vegan dead-zone, but my super smart phoney phone led me to rawlicious! I walked in and maybe those raw foodists get chilly, but it was as hot as Ryan Gosling in there! I guess they had the heat cranked up like cray cray. HIGHLIGHTS: 100% Organic! Local! BUZZKILLS: It was so so effing hot in that place, my $15 salad was wilted and warm (but still so delicious that I ate it all) -
Bex’s 5-star review: I tried the Bunna Cafe at a vegan pop-up in Bushwick. I had been wanting to try them for SO freaking long, but there was always a huge line at other events where they were (vegan drinks, brooklyn bazaar, etc). As a New Yorker, a quarter of my life is spent waiting in lines, so I try to avoid them as much as possible. the pop-up had only been open for an hour or so, but they had sold out of almost everything. What I did get was okay, but cold. I don't use any salt at home, so I actually very much appreciated that it was kind of bland, but I would have loved some kind of spice. I believe in them, though! 100% vegan Ethiopian food is a stellar idea and I'd totally support a storefront. HIGHLIGHTS: The dude was friendly. BUZZKILLS: Cold food, Lacking flavor. -
Bex’s 4-star review: I mainly order delivery from Viva because A) Dining-in is a tiny nightmare, B) they are pretty quick, and C) pizza in my jammies trumps all. HIGHLIGHTS: They claim to use mostly organic ingredients, Mother Earth and Vegetariano pizzas are rulluh good, Creative pizzas without relying heavily on Daiya Cheese BUZZKILLS: Kinda spency, service can be pretty terrible -
Bex’s 2-star review: My quest for organic vegan food led me here, however, I felt very much like Atreyu did in The Neverending Story when he went to see Morla: the ancient one. Constant frustration and people who don't care. Nothing is labeled as Vegan on the menu so I had to ask about each item that caught my eye. The dude behind the counter said "yeah" to all the things I asked about and then threw a hunk of bread on my plate. I asked what it was made with and he rattled off a few animal products. Yeah, I want my meal to be totally vegan, but throw some eggs in the mix anyway... I began to distrust what I ordered. I got my food quickly and couldn't believe the portion size. Is this the Mary Kate Olsen diet? Am I being punked? Seriously, who ate the rest of my food? With a teeny tiny fun-sized water, the total came to just under $20. HIGHLIGHTS: Organic! BUZZKILLS: Everything else. -
Bex’s 1-star review: I've been hearing not-so-nice things about OA. Apparently, hardly anything is actually organic. And they are being bought out by a company who will start pasteurizing the juices and cooking the food. Bex’s 5-star review: FULL DISCLOSURE: I hate working out. It's boring, it's time consuming, it's exhausting, and it makes me really thirsty. FlyWheel has saved my girlish figure from turning into a blob of atrophy. The classes are fun and engaging. The equipment is clean, new, and modern. They give you special shoes, hair ties, bobbypins, water, towels, mints, etc. They also adjust the bikes to fit your height. HIGHLIGHTS: Jesse's classes are the best! BUZZKILLS: Pretty spency. The seats are really uncomfortable to the point where I get adorable bruises on my tush. -
Bex’s 1-star review: Come here only for dessert. The prices are OUTRAGEOUS for the portions they give you. Everything seems to have an oily nut cheese as the basis, which I assume is to make up for the fact that the dish is so small. I left feeling hungry, yet oddly heavy. And my wallet left empty, yet full of regret. -
Bex’s 1-star review: An entirely vegetarian Indian joint? Awesome. Vegan options? Not so much. Or at least the people working there have no idea what is actually in anything. They also seem to have be running a covert operation and using the restaurant as a diversion because they seem really confused and annoyed if they have to do anything restaurant related. HIGHLIGHTS: The upptaphams are rulluh good. BUZZKILLS: They recently raised all the prices as high as an additional $4. Sorry, but $14 for a lentil/rice pancake, that isn't even organic, is cray. Rude customer service. Misinformation. Styrofoam packaging. -
Bex’s 5-star review: I normally order in from HK, but my boyfriend and I decided to dine in the restaurant for change. We sat at the bar and ordered. A lovely gentleman placed two mini sangrias in front of us. Normally i do not like sangria, but it was delicious! The owner? Manager? was sitting at the bar and offered me a glass of Rioja and then later topped off my glass with the rest of the bottle. It is very rare to find such a kind staff and a generous owner. They all seemed like a big happy family. I will definitely be coming here more often. -
Bex’s 5-star review: If I had a zillion dollars, I'd be here all day chuggin the elixir of the 1%, but I only come when I can scrape together the $8 they charge for about 5 oz. of my favorite beautiful concoction: The Volcano. It's a combination of ginger juice, cayenne, pepper, oil of oregano, and maybe lemon? SO wonderfully spicy. HIGHLIGHTS: MARTINA! I work down the street and her crazy ass comes and brings us free goodies at the end of the night (which is how my Volcano addiction started), ALL ORGANIC, Clever names of prepared foods BUZZKILLS: You have to make a decision between your rent or fresh juice if you wanna roll with these kind of prices. -
Bex’s 5-star review: While this place isn't perfect, I condone a grocery store that is 100% organic and think it deserves 5 stars even with the flaws here and there. Everything is super clean and well stocked and I didn't have to rifle through a bunch of terrible produce to settle on the "least ugly" of the bunch. HIGHLIGHTS: Organic!, Huge variety, great selection, no membership required to shop there BUZZKILLS: My cauliflower was pretty small and chalked full of little buggers (or as I like to call em' "organic certifiers"), Bulk section a little overpriced -
Bex’s 3-star review: I come here sometimes just to grab a Soy Latte and GTFO. The service is always pretty good at the front, but BEWARE! Don't go any further! You've been warned! The service in the dining room is a scalding hot mess. These poor servers are so overwhelmed all the time. I feel for them, as I too am a server with too many tables in an understaffed restaurant with bitchy upper westsiders. I get it. But, holy effing moly. If you have a whole day to waste away and you love rude servers who hate you, GO HERE NOW! HIGHLIGHTS: Yummy 6 veg quiche (small as hell tho), Quinoa Taboule, ORGANIC, Good coffee, Clearly labeled vegan stuffs BUZZKILLS: Did I mention service? Prices are pretty obnoxious for what you get -
Bex’s 1-star review: Oof. First, let me say that my LPQ service expectations are very low. I usually go there when i want to write and be ignored. But this location is impressively bad. I went in and sat myself at a dirty table (fun fact: they were all dirty). I waited 20 minutes (no exaggeration) before i got up and asked for a menu. I sat another 20 minutes before getting up to ask if i had a server. Presumably the manager, took my order and my food came quickly. After that i was properly cared for and then i asked for the check to which the manager replied that it was taken care of. I assumed that meant my meal was comped (which is super generous and surprising!) but then my check arrived and i got a small discount for the lack of service. While this diatribe of my very first world problems is frivolous, I will say that it just shouldn't be that hard. They weren't busy and there was no reason for anyone to be waiting 40 minutes to order. -
Bex’s 1-star review: I saw on the sign in the window that they had vegan options, so I decided to check it out. I sat down with my boyfriend and we were the only customers. It took a really long time to be acknowledged by the waiter, who was just kind of pacing around. The menu did not clarify what was vegan, so we asked the waiter. His English was not very good and he didn't know what the word "vegan" meant (very bad sign). He brought out some bread and we asked if there were any dairy or eggs in the bread. He said he didn't know and didn't make any attempts to find out. As much as I love diarrhea, I just wasn't really in the mood. -
Bex’s 3-star review: I rarely get my nails done because the thought of some poor Asian woman at my feet, whilst I snootily pretend I'm very busy and important on my fancy phone, drives me into the throes of an existential crisis. BUT, I like that they have a clean air certification sign and that I believe it. It doesn't smell like chemicals when you walk in and the employees aren't all wearing masks. They also have a vegan nail polish brand sans all the nasty chemicals! So why the three stars? The employees are very sweet and look like they try and maybe even care! But, they don't do a great job and the price is kinda of steep. $31 for a pedicure? They also try to sneakily get you to agree to a SPA PEDICURE which is $12 extra. It is also really weird. I saw the lady next to me getting conned into one and her feet were being wrapped in saran wrap after being thoroughly lotioned...(um, no thanks). Also, the owner is kind of mean. She is constantly yelling at her staff in front of the customers. That is so tacky. HIGHLIGHTS: Clean Air! Vegan Nail Polish! Packaged Sterile tools! BUZZKILLS: Price, Management, Quality -
Bex’s 5-star review: I was skeptical to accept an invitation to come here. I've only ever been to the UCB Theater on the west side, which has only been getting worse every time I go. But what's $5 on a rainy Thursday night to go see someone trying to make me laugh? I walked in with my friends and they immediately bought a bottle of wine. We each paid our $5 and walked in. The theater was much bigger than I expected. And unlike it's ugly sister location, all the chairs looked the same and all very comfy. The comedy was SOLID. I was LOLing and ROFLing non-stop. The jokes were all very up to date and really effing good. A few of the comedians were kinda meh, but girl comedians are rarely funny (coming from a feminist!). Plus, the crowd was BRUTAL! There were no pity laughs and no response unless it was to laugh at a really good joke. Example: Comedian: So, I recently just got married. Audience: *crickets* Comedian: Wow, okay, thanks a lot. The sound quality was great too. At the other location, I have to bring earplugs because I'd blow out my ear drums if I didn't. At the end of the show, they have a separate bar area were you can go hang out with the comedians after the show! What?? Not to compare, but at the other location, they prod you outside like cattle and tell you to GTFO. HIGHLIGHTS: Joe Pera, Adam Conover, Karl Hess, Sean Donnelly BUZZKILLS: N/A -
Bex’s 3-star review: I was way harsh (ty) with my last review of Peacefood, but I was in a really bad place in my life :P Peacefood has its ups and downs, but they are 100% vegan and do have some tasty stuff. The desserts are upsettingly good, at least. I hate that nothing is organic, but at least they don't lie about it. -
Bex’s 3-star review: TJ's has improved in some ways since the last time. They have a lot more organic produce, but I really dislike that they package it. There is always one bad one in with the good and it's a huge waste of plastic. While the price is lower than other grocery stores, I end up throwing out some of it due to them forcing me to buy spoiled food. Lame. HIGHLIGHTS: The prices on organic OJ, Aloe, and paper products. Long, but pretty fast lines, Good customer service, cheap and durable re-useable bags BUZZKILLS: Few vegan things, wasteful packaging -
Bex’s 5-star review: This place has two separate rooms: a cafe with tables and a room with pour over stations and beans galore. A very nice girl dealt with all of my annoying questions about their organic coffee and where it came from. She recommended a couple to me and I paid way more than I should have for a little sack of beans. Admittedly, the coffee is REALLY tasty. -
Bex’s 3-star review: My BK friends have been raving about this place since it opened and I finally made it out there all the way from the UWS. My boyfriend and I arrived at 12:30pm to an empty restaurant. We inquired about soy-free/gluten-free options for my allergy ridden boyfriend. The waitress didn't really know and made a few guesses without going to check on the accuracy of said guesses. He played it safe and I got a few things that looked good. HIGHLIGHTS: Affordable, pretty inside, organic BUZZKILLS: Polenta benedict was pretty meh and the homefries were way too heavily seasoned with paprika and other spices, truffle fries were very underdone and way too heavily seasoned with nooch, The radio was playing INCLUDING COMMERCIALS (mostly mcdonalds) - so obnoxious -
Bex’s 2-star review: I really hate leaving bad reviews, BUT I really tried to find the positive aspects of this place. Normally, I don't go to non-vegan restaurants unless I am with non-vegan people and I don't want to be a brat by insisting we go elsewhere, I'm not a snob, I'm just tired of getting sick from misunderstandings and cross contamination. I mean, I love diarrhea as much as the next guy, but...I digress. Anyway, as a server, I try to give other servers some slack, but our server was annoyed from the beginning to hear that there were a few vegans at the table. I asked what my options were as it said "vegan options available" on the menu. He said there weren't really any options. My boyfriend ordered some plain pasta with tomato sauce which came out with cheese, Ay yi yi. Our server disappeared a whole lot, so another server graciously remedied the pasta and ran our card at the end of the meal after he saw us trying to pay for a long time. We left a good tip because people in the service industry can't tip below a certain percentage without nightsweats, but we handed the other server some cash and thanked him for saving us. BUZZKILLS: Vegans are not welcome.

Bex’s 3-star review: The service here is so friendly! I love that the owner is always there and chats with his customers. I got the marinara slice and asked to have some mushrooms on top. It was one of the best slices of pizza I have ever had. You can tell there is nothing from a can in the tomato sauce. It was really fresh and aromatic with fresh parsley and basil. HIGHLIGHTS: All vegetarian, fresh ingredients, gluten-free pizza (though no vegan :( ) , friendly staff BUZZKILLS: VERY OVERPRICED ($5 a small slice), not organic, closed mondays
