Hey everyone. So I just signed a lease to a new apartment and one of the provisions I signed makes me responsible for replacing keys and installing new locks, costing upwards of $1000, if I lose a key....in fact even if I get mugged and the keys are stolen.

So, I'm slightly terrified. My days of losing keys is behind me but still, shit happens. I would just make copies of  the keys and put the originals, that I have to return, In a safe place but they are medeco keys and I don't know where I can duplicate them.

So does anyone know of any places that might do it? If you don't want to say here, message me. Thanks for your help everyone!

"Medeco is not even that good"

Since when? Sorry but this is a false aspersion you're casting here. Pray tell, who ever gave you this rank disinformation?

Most hardware stores cut keys; ones which also cut Medeco keys usually have a sign or banner stating that they also offer this service. They wouldn't do that if there wasn't some distinction associated with Medeco.

But that's not the reason for me contradicting you, this is merely circumstantial evidence (which I cite only because I know it can be demonstrated off-line if you just walk around with your eyes open). More simply put: anyone who knows a modicum about locks would speak up in defense of Medeco. Any book on the subject written in the last ten years, would also bear me out on this. Just sayin'.

Manual bypass is not my best skill (I don't practice enough) but yeah. I at least know the literature on the topic.

My old building had this, too, and I got my own copies preemptively for like $50 each I think? Good thing, too, because my monster roommate...

lol.@Michael. The high security Medeco keys which are many like the M3 are impossible to be out there without the card. The locksmith has to swipe the card on the machine to make a copy. If you own the lock and loose the card, it is so much work to get a replacement card. So, not, you are not gonna get that key copy. Dont waste your time.

  2. Monster roommate? Tell us more, David.
