I tried searching the threads on about getting rid of my furniture but couldn't find any threads on it. I'm trying to get rid of two chairs, a sofa, and some kind of armouire thingie. I thought I could just call the trash company because they offer free removal of 5 things as long as you live in the city and pay for garage.

So my roommate called and turns out we have to ask our landlord for permission in order to get rid of our crap. We called him and he told us that we have to pay him $15 per piece to get rid of the stuff. WTF, it's a free service! I'm refuse to pay him for something that free but I can't find any furniture removal services that can offer a better deal then that.

We put the stuff up on craigslist, but I don't know if someone going to take it and we need to get rid of this stuff by Thursday. I'd don't want to pay our landlord just because he trying to make some cash off of us. Does anybody else have any ideas how to get rid of this stuff?

Borrow a friends truck and take it down to Goodwill, a shelter, or Red Cross. Try contacting Red Cross and see if they will take it off their hands. I'm sure they can put you in contact of someone who is in need of furniture.

if you live in the city, put it out on the sidewalk.  either somebody will grab it, or the city will come by and pick it up.

I'd do that Elrod, but I hate it when I see other peoples crap on the sidwalk. If I knew for sure someone going to take it I would but if it doesn't, that stuff going to be out there for couple of days soaking in the moisture and other stuff.

I had this problem a couple of months ago. I had an ad on craiglist and everything. No takers. It was a nice but 10 year old sofabed from Macy's. So, I called Sunset Scavenger/Golden Gate and they came and picked it up for free.

The City won't come get it on their own. There are steep fines for dumping now. The City needs money and is itching to hand out fines for this.

Mitsi that's what I looked up and I called them up because I was expecting them to do it for free. Then they told us we have to call our landlord first. That's when our landlord was like "No, You pay $15 dollars per piece". I don't want to pay him but he offers it to us for a cheap price, it's just that the service should be free.

St. Anthony's Foundation will come and pick it up or call 1800-GOT-JUNK

Your landlord is most likely not trying to rip you off. He pays for trash removal and the garbage service would charge HIM if they had to come by to pick your junk . At least that how it has been in the places I have lived.

re: landlord - what total  bullshit. You do need the account number for Sunset/Golden Gate. You may try calling to get the number from customer service. Good luck!

We pay for garbage since it's a combined all together in our place. I would think he'd let us used the free service that the city offers without making us pay for it.

well, luckily you have at least 3 other suggestions for places that will pick it up without charging you - and benefit worthy causes.

Thanks for the options. We called goodwill and left a message, I don't know if they will get back to us in time. Called Community thift and they were going to take it but only had openings for next Tuesday, and we have to get rid of this stuff by Thursday. St. Anthony's Foundation doesn't accept furniture. Going to call United Cerebral Palsy and hope that they want this junk.

Concearning what Mitsi "controlled hypervigiliance" H. says, I have done the same thing. I called them to pick up my couch and bookshelves. I did NOT have to ask my lanlord and I lived in an apartment building. This is a scam on the part of your loandlord--- the service should be totally free. Call them back and say your landlord should have nothing to do with it.

We're just going to try to do everything not to pay him, but we're going have to do it since I don't like the idea of dropping the couch on some random street. Unless anybody wants 2 chairs and a dresser.

Goodwill is flooded and only takes "new" stuff . Even if you call Sunset Scavenge for a free pick up they do everything possible not to take it . Do a hauling search on Yelp and pay to have it hauled away . And yes leaving your shit on the street is littering . Thanks to all the people who litter our city and suggest others do the same .

I would put a "free" add on craigslist with just the street name saying it will be at the curb and whoever comes first gets it.

I'm in the same situation and I just tracked down the place that all these companies bring their stuff to.  If you can find a way to transport the stuff, you can bring it to:

    SF Recycling and Disposal Inc
    norcalwaste.com

They will take anything and charge $21 for up to ~300lbs.

satruck.com Salvation Army....they will come pick it up, and give you a receipt for your donation.  Tax deductible, baby.
