This is not the best answer, but I am guilty of doing this: leave it on the street corner.
I know, I know, that is bad, but it is a option.

I wonder if homeless shelters can/will take used mattresses? I'm sure there's a need for them, though they may not be allowed to. Hmm, worth looking into methinks.

I heard of EcoHaul (ecohaul.com) from the organic mattress store Keetsa (keetsa.com) in the SoMa.

Its not good to donate a used mattress to a homeless shelter or any shelter at that, unless their tightly wrapped in plastic with no holes or rips and are new. I currently work in a family shelter and there's an ongoing of the spreading of bed bugs all because of people being transferred from shelter to shelter. Bed bugs hide in and around the seams of the mattresses and wait patiently for someone to lay down. Theirs currently  a family here that came from a different shelter and have bite marks all over their bodies. When we see this, guest are requaired to leave their items outside for a coulple of hours, wash all their clothes, sometimes even throw them away depending on how bad it is. Even if you get an exterminator, bed bugs can live years in your home waiting for the treatment to pass. So my advice to you is be care even taking someone elses donated mattress.

dump it in the middle of a highway during rush hour?

kidding!  is the new mattress being delivered or are you picking it up?  a lot of retailers will dispose of your old one when you buy a new one--just ask the delivery guys
