The case against Alec Baldwin centered on how bullets were handled at the beginning and at the end. Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter trial in the killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins came to a sudden stop on Friday when a judge ruled that the prosecution improperly failed to share ammunition evidence with the defense. Authorities could never definitively determine how the lethal ammunition got into the mix and into Baldwin's revolver on the set of the film “Rust.” The end of his trial may have shut down one of the final avenues for learning more. Several civil lawsuits against Baldwin and the film's producers remain, however.

The first female commissioner of the Fire Department of New York says she plans to resign because it is time to “pass the torch” after two years in the job. In a statement Saturday, Laura Kavanagh didn't say when she plans to step down, but she said she will spend the next several months helping with the transition in leadership. Kavanagh says she made the decision over the last month, calling it a hard one. Mayor Eric Adams, who appointed her in October 2022, called Kavanagh a trailblazer and said it was her decision to leave the job.

The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse is in danger of toppling into the water, and advocates for the 150-year-old lighthouse in the middle of Hudson River are urgently trying to save it. Turbulence from passing commercial ships is speeding the deterioration of its wooden supports below. The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society is raising money to place a submerged steel curtain around the lighthouse. The ambitious preservation project could cost up to $10 million. The threat is so great the National Trust for Historic Preservation has placed the lighthouse on its 2024 list of the country's most endangered historic places.

A nearly three-year legal saga for Alec Baldwin in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer has ended without a verdict but with tears of relief for the actor and a small coterie of family who had settled into a somber routine inside a windowless New Mexico courtroom at trial. Inside the court, jurors dutifully scrawled notes and listened with steepled hands. But they were sent home early Friday as the criminal case against Baldwin collapsed amid gasps in the courtroom gallery and accusations that prosecutors “buried” evidence about ammunition.
