A 1982 graduate of EMU, Laurie (Leonhardt) Hubbard was captain of the team as a senior in 1981 and won three events, the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyle, while also swimming on three winning relays at the Mid-American Conference Invitational. She was named MAC Swimmer of the Year in 1981 and also qualified for the NCAA National Championship at the University of North Carolina.

Hubbard helped the team to a runner-up spot at the 1980 Mid-West American Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Meet in Ann Arbor and won the 500 free, the 1,650 freestyle and swam on the winning 400-yard medley relay team. Additionally, she won the 100 free at the 1978 MAIAW Regional meet. Overall, Hubbard captured 20 first-place finishes in the 1978 season, finishing no lower than second in any individual race.

Hubbard was a member of EMU's  Champions Advisory Board,  a group of key stakeholders consisting of former student-athletes and alumni who share a common goal of bettering EMU student-athletes’ experience. In the role, she was participating in development activities and serving as an ambassador for EMU Athletics.

Hubbard passed away July 28, 2018, at the age of 58.
