All human activity alters water quality, so #wastewater can come from household or industrial sources or even rainwater. After being used, water is considered “polluted” and must be treated before returning to natural areas. 💧 Wastewater treatment plants play a key role in environmental protection by treating wastewater before it is discharged into natural environments. They use a mix of sophisticated #technologies to eliminate pollutants and preserve the quality of #water resources. 🌱 🌟 3 examples of standard-setting facilities: ➡️ In #France, the Achères plant is one of Europe’s largest and uses cutting edge technologies, including membrane bioreactors and #ozonation, to achieve a high level of clean-up. ➡️ In #Jordan, the As Samra plant treats and redistributes wastewater from the capital and surrounding areas, meeting 25% of the country’s agriculture-related water needs and 12% of overall water needs. ➡️ In #Bulgaria, in 2009, Veolia modernized one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in the Balkans by installing #cogeneration systems using biogas produced by anaerobic digesters. By producing green #energy, the plant reduces its dependency on fossil fuels. How do we produce renewable heat and electricity for municipalities? We use boilers that use #biomass or non-recyclable #waste as fuel. ⚡♻️ ➡️ Heat from combustion is captured by heat exchangers that produce steam. High-pressure steam is used to generate #electricity, and low-pressure steam will be used for heating. ➡️ Electricity and #heat are transferred to district distribution networks. The electricity improves heat pumps’ energy sufficiency, and the steam provides heat to buildings’ heating systems. How do we sort solid waste for #recycling? ♻️ 1️⃣ Waste is sorted by size in a trommel screen, then sent to a screen filter that separates items by shape and density. 2️⃣ Auto-adaptive optical sorting automatically selects different materials and ejects waste containing material identified by the scanner. 3️⃣ Once sorted and baled, compacted #waste becomes a new resource manufacturers can use as a raw material. Veolia’s ESG policy is inseparable from its GreenUp strategy. 🌿 Just a year ago, Veolia published its first ESG report, illustrating the progress made on maximizing the Group’s positive impact for all its stakeholders, in line with its purpose, since the Impact 2023 program launched in 2020. 📝 ➡️ We attach the same importance to our corporate non-financial performance – environmental, social and governance – as to economic, financial and commercial performance, and have done so since 2020, through what we call our multifaceted performance policy. It is a pioneering approach and includes the concept of impact on our stakeholders. In 2024, the second edition of this report highlights our most recent achievements and commitments and outlines our #ESG ambitions for the new strategic program, #GreenUp. 🌱 The ambition is clear: to accelerate, transform, and provide tangible, affordable, replicable #decarbonization, #depollution and resource regeneration solutions. ♻️ In terms of impact, the Group intends to: ➡️ Eliminate 18 Mt #CO2 eq.
