LIVERMORE, CA — Chris Van Schaack, who has served as the deputy superintendent of Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District since 2017, will become district superintendent starting Aug. 1, the LVJUSD Board announced.

Van Schaack has been with the district since 1994, when he joined as a high school teacher and coach. He rose through the ranks and served as an elementary and high school principal and director of students services and special education. In 2011, he was appointed assistant superintendent of administrative services, and became deputy superintendent in 2017.

Van Schaack has led the district’s negotiation team for the past 12 years, and played an important role in the district’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic. His appointment earned the endorsement of the Livermore Education Association teacher’s union.

“On behalf of LEA members, I want to support the promotion of Chris Van Schaack as the new superintendent of the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District. We believe this consistency in leadership will be of benefit to our students,” LEA President Aimee Thompson said at the June 28 meeting where he was appointed.

Outgoing Superintendent Kelly Bowers, who has worked with Van Schaack since 2012, also voiced her approval. “Chris is more than prepared to take on the role of Superintendent. He understands the needs of our District and has great vision for propelling it forward,” Bowers, who announced her retirement in June after serving 12 years as superintendent, said in a statement. “He has the full endorsement of our Board and the enthusiastic support of our colleagues to take our District to even greater heights. It is with great pride that I pass the baton to him.”

“I recognize the level of trust that goes with assigning responsibility for 13,000 students and 1,500 employees, and I commit to our Board and community that not a day will go by when I do not appreciate that in my leadership and decision making,” Bowers said of his appointment.
