LIVERMORE, CA — Yeonjun Kim of Livermore High School is a finalist for the National Merit Battelle Scholarship, one of the corporate-sponsored awards financed by about 94 corporations, foundations, and business organizations. Finalists are either children of employees, residents of the communities served by the companies, or plan to pursue college majors or careers the companies wish to encourage.

Kim has been accepted into the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science to study bioengineering, according to his LinkedIn profile. He is concertmaster of the Honors Chamber Orchestra, captain of the Science Olympiad, president of the Nature Club, president of the California Scholarship Foundation, president of the National Honors Society, co-founder and vice president of the Biology Club, and a sound technician for the Honors Jazz Band, in addition to other affiliations. He is also a second-degree black belt in tae kwon do.

Kim was among 770 high school seniors nationally who advanced to the finalist level. In September, more than 16,000 semifinalists were selected on the basis of their PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores. To advance to the finalist round, semifinalists needed to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed or recommended by a high school official, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm their qualifying test performance.
