Police Pursue Possible Murder Suspect In Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA — A man was behind bars on Monday in connection to a shooting that left another man dead in Long Beach.

Police received a report of gunshots in the 1600 block of Gaviota Avenue at about 8:46 p.m. When first responders arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound in his upper body and attempted life-saving aid.

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics took the injured man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Through investigation, detectives determined the suspect and the victim did not know each other. Detectives believe there was a brief interaction between the men before the shooting, but the motive remains under investigation.

When clearing the scene, officers observed a suspicious car in the area. Long Beach Police Department officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspect didn't pull over which resulted in a car chase.

The vehicle stopped near the 1700 block of Pacific Coast Highway and the driver fled on foot. After establishing a perimeter, SWAT officers located the man for an unrelated no-bail arrest warrant.

"His involvement in the murder, if any, remains under investigation," LBPD said in a statement.
