VERNON, CT — Vernon officials distributed hundreds of free coronavirus in-home tests Tuesday at Henry Park in an event that essentially went off without a hitch.

"That wasn't bad at all," one resident said as he collected his box.

He was about sixth in line. The first to arrive was a fun-loving gentleman who came to the park at about 7 a.m. saying he was in no hurry. He spaced out and wasn't even first in line. Lines started forming at about 8:30 a.m. So many cars were in line by 11 a.m. that distribution began then rather than the scheduled noontime start.

Kits were available to Vernon residents only and fewer than 2,000 test kits are available via the state.

"But that's better than nothing," Vernon Town Administrator and Emergency Management Director Michael Purcaro said. "We were able to get at-home tests to those who need then today in an orderly fashion."

Distribution was intended for Vernon residents who have what town officials said is, "an immediate need for testing because they have been exposed to COVID-19 or are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms."

The test kits were limited to one to a person and a maximum of two per vehicle, based on need. Most of the those attending the distribution even respected that limit, although some tried to scoff up more that the allotment.
