Connecticut Weather: Powerful Nor'easter In the Forecast

A powerful nor'easter is in the forecast for next week and already Hazardous Weather Outlooks have been issued for Connecticut.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan is calling this possible nor'easter, which is forecast for later in the week, a "beast of a storm." He said one computer model shows some towns receiving more than five inches of rain from this powerful storm.

Of course the storm is still days away from Connecticut but it does look like the state will see a nor'easter, which will impact weather on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. Right now, temps look to be warm enough that this will largely be a major rain and wind storm. But snow isn't ruled out either. It all depends on the storm track.

Hanrahan said Sunday, "Signals still point toward a strong storm by the end of the week. This is the GFS computer model which shows almost all rain but it is a beast of a storm with strong winds and rain totals over 5 inches in some towns! Of course this is just one solution but the weather pattern supports a big storm. Rain, wind, coastal flooding, and snow are possible - how much of each remains to be seen."

When a Facebook commenter said they were happy that it didn't look like the storm would lead to school cancelations because it is believed to be rain, Hanrahan responded, "Can't say that yet. All hazards are possible. We just don't know yet."

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Fred Campagna said, "A soggy Sunday gives way to better weather early in the week. We're tracking a late-week storm that could bring rain, snow, strong winds and coastal flooding."

The National Weather Service has already issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the Connecticut coast and Hartford and Tolland counties. For the coast, "There is the possibility for an extended period of minor to moderate coastal flooding and beach erosion from Thursday into the upcoming weekend. There is also a low chance for flash flooding from Thursday night into Saturday morning."

For Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties, "A significant coastal storm is possible late this week...but is not a certainty at this time given the potential is 4 to 5 days in the future. If this coastal storm comes to fruition there is the potential for several weather hazards. These might include significant amounts of rain and/or snow and perhaps some fresh water flooding. Strong to damaging winds would be possible with the greatest risk on the coastal plain."

The good news is that the weather on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday looks very warm for this time of year. Temps will rise into the 50s on Monday and temps will up to 15 degrees above normal.
