The five-year, formula-based grant and will address the drop, fail and withdrawal rate among Black students enrolled in introductory English courses, as well as create supporting research opportunities and experiences for these students.

“We hope this three-pronged approach will support Black students’ success in their gateway English courses and increase participation in undergraduate research experiences, which will help them in their future careers,” said Dr. Charles Fox, principal investigator for the grant.

The program establishes the Center for Outreach and Research Engagement (CORE) with outreach and research coordinators on all five campuses. It also will fund an executive director. CORE will address the inadequacies inherent in higher education that disadvantage Black individuals.  Faculty coordinators have begun planning events for spring 2022.

As associate dean of student success, Dr. Charles Fox leads student success initiatives implemented at Perimeter College, including Momentum Year, G2C, the Prison Education Project, Frontier Set and others.
