The clinic, located on Perimeter’s Dunwoody Campus, offers dental hygiene services to Georgia State faculty, staff and students, as well as the general public.

“We are the best kept secret,” says Dental Hygiene program director and associate professor Risa Handman about the clinic’s benefit to patients looking for high quality and affordable oral care provided by Perimeter College students.

“We offer a variety of services, including teeth cleanings, at about 10 percent of what it would cost you to at a traditional dentist’s office,” she said. “So, we’re an excellent choice for someone who maybe doesn’t have insurance but wants exceptional dental care.”

An added value, Handman says, is that clinic patients help student practitioners get training and education requirements needed to graduate from Perimeter’s program which is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Students working at the Perimeter clinic provide individualized, evidence-based dental hygiene care under the supervision of licensed dental hygiene faculty and licensed dentists. Services include everything from oral examinations and cancer screenings to dental cleanings, x-rays and cavity sealant applications.

“The quality of care provided by the students is equal to the standard of care provided by a licensed entry-level clinician,” Handman says.

She also notes that Perimeter’s Dental Hygiene Class of 2021 achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the clinical licensure examination.

“The program has a long-standing reputation for success,” Handman said. “I have dentists call me and say, ‘I need a hygienist and I want a graduate from your program’.”
