Chance for Large Hail, Tornadoes, Flash Flooding Wednesday: Hazardous Weather Outlook

The Chicago suburbs could get hit hard by storms on Wednesday.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for much of northern Illinois, including the Chicago suburbs, as strong thunderstorms are expected to hit the area Wednesday. A combination of an unseasonably strong storm system and a warm and humid air mass could yield significant severe weather over the Chicago region on Wednesday.

The thunderstorms will start in the morning when heavy rain and some severe hail is expected and will give way to a more significant severe thunderstorm risk for mid-afternoon and through the evening, according to the National Weather Service. Potential hazards include large hail, damaging winds, localized flash flooding and tornadoes.

• TODAY: Sunny. Highs in the lower 80s. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph.
• TONIGHT: Mostly clear in the evening...then partly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Lows in the mid 60s. West winds 5 to 10 mph.
• WEDNESDAY: Thunderstorms and showers...best chance in the morning. Some thunderstorms may produce heavy rainfall. Highs around 80. South winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 80 percent.
• WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Thunderstorms and showers likely in the evening...then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Some thunderstorms may be severe with heavy rainfall in the evening. Lows in the upper 60s. South winds 10 to 15 mph in the evening shifting to the west after midnight. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
• THURSDAY: Partly sunny. A 20 percent chance of showers in the morning. Highs in the upper 70s inland...but only in the mid 70s near the lake. North winds 10 to 20 mph.
