105-Degree Heat Index Brings Warnings In MD To Start Scorching Week

Maryland is in for another scorching week. It may feel like over 100 degrees Monday and Tuesday. Thunderstorms are possible all week.

MARYLAND — Maryland won't get a break from the heat this week. A heat advisory was issued to warn of sizzling temperatures on Monday.

"Real-feel" temperatures could eclipse 100 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. Highs are in the 90s every day until Thursday.

The heat brings daily chances of spot thunderstorms until Saturday.

The National Weather Service expects heat index values up to 105 degrees Monday and 104 degrees Tuesday.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," the National Weather Service said in its heat advisory. "Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances."

The heat advisory lasts from noon to 8 p.m. on Monday.

The advisory covers portions of central, northcentral, northeast, northern and southern Maryland, the District of Columbia and central, northern and northwest Virginia.

Communities covered by the advisory include: Carroll, Baltimore, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Marys, Calvert, Montgomery, Howard, and Harford counties.

Cities in the advisory include Frederick, Eldersburg, Westminster, Reisterstown, Cockeysville, Elkton, Baltimore, Bowie, Suitland-Silver Hill, Clinton, College Park, Greenbelt, Laurel, Camp Springs, Glen Burnie, Annapolis, Severn, Severna Park, Arnold, Odenton, St. Charles, Waldorf, Lexington Park, California, Chesapeake Beach, Huntingtown, Dunkirk, North Beach, Lusby, Prince Frederick, Germantown, Damascus, Bethesda, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, Lisbon, Columbia, Ellicott City, Jarrettsville, and Aberdeen.

"Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside," the advisory said. "When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke."

The National Weather Service warned that the high temperatures and steamy humidity could cause heat-related illness.

"Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible," the advisory said. "To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1."
