Former Police Officer Indicted for False Worker's Comp Claim

Prince George's County Police officer Cpl. Melvin Kenney resigned in August and was indicted Thursday.

A Prince George’s County grand jury on Thursday indicted a former police officer for allegedly falsifying a worker’s compensation claim.

According to the police department, former Prince George’s County Corporal Melvin Kenney filed the false claim while he was employed by the department in May 2015.

When the allegation of misconduct surfaced, Kenney was reassigned to desk duty. He resigned effective Aug. 31, the department said.

Police Chief Mark Magaw released this statement about Kenney’s indictment:

“Following an internal investigation, the PGPD brought this case to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office. When an officer betrays the integrity of the badge, this department takes those allegations seriously. We hold our officers to a high set of standards. Our community deserves nothing less.”
