Indicted White House Staffer Resigns; Allegedly Shot at Boyfriend

Upper Marlboro woman who worked at White House is charged with assault after she allegedly shot at her boyfriend, a Capitol Police officer.

A White House staffer from Prince George’s County resigned after she was indicted on assault charges for allegedly firing her boyfriend’s handgun at him during an argument over whether he was seeing other women.

A White House spokesperson told WJLA that Barvetta Singletary, 37, of Upper Marlboro resigned her job on Wednesday, a day after she was indicted. She had worked as a special assistant to the president and legislative liaison at the White House.

The Prince George’s County Police Department arrested Singletary Aug. 7 in what police say was a domestic dispute. Authorities say she grabbed her boyfriend’s service weapon; he works for the U.S. Capitol Police.

NBCWashington reports Singletary had been on unpaid leave since her arrest, federal officials said, and her access to the White House complex was revoked.

Singletary reportedly grabbed two cell phones and the man’s .40 caliber Glock 23 service weapon out of his car, according to charging documents. NBC reports Singletary demanded the passwords to the victim’s phones, then fired the gun when he refused.
