Suspect Shot By Police Officer Dies, Name Released

Police have released the name of a Forestville man who died at an area hospital after he was shot by a Prince George’s County Police officer during a struggle over the officer’s gun.

Police have not released the name of the officer involved in the case.

Asshams Pharoah Manley, 30, of the 3400 block of Princes Grace Court in Forestville died Saturday from a gunshot wound suffered during a struggle with police. Tests conducted at the hospital show Manley had opiates and marijuana in his system, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 11:20 p.m. Friday on Walker Mill Road in District Heights. The officer was on patrol near Brooks Drive and Marlboro Pike when he heard a car crash and went to investigate. Manley reportedly ran from the crash scene, the officer followed and there was a struggle over the officer’s gun when he caught up to Manley.

Police say that despite being shot, the suspect continued to fight with the officer. A second officer used his Taser and a third officer was able to restrain Manley.

None of the police officers was hurt.

The officer who fired his weapon is a two-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department. He is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
