MASSACHUSETTS — Nine Massachusetts cities are on a list of the best pizza cities in America. The highest ranked among them is Cambridge at 73.

The list of the 250 Best Cities in America for Pizza, created by outdoor pizza oven maker Pizzello, ranked New York City in the top spot. No surprise there.

After that, things get a little dubious. Number two in the country is Tulsa, OK, followed by Los Angeles. Peoria, AZ and Jonesboro, AR round out the top five.

Here's where the Massachusetts cities ranked:

  • Cambridge, 73
  • Springfield, 102
  • Somerville, 103
  • Lowell, 115
  • Worcester, 138
  • Fall River, 167
  • Boston, 218
  • New Bedford, 242
  • Lynn, 247

The list determined the best pizza cities in America through "an in-depth analysis of average Google reviews from the nation’s 500 most populous towns and cities." The use of Google ratings may explain some of the odd inclusions. But the list does make the bold claim of creating "a definitive list of top-tier pizza destinations."

Apparently, the pizzerias of meccas like Oklahoma and Arizona have Santarpio's and Pizzeria Regina beat.

Pizzello does attempt to provide an explanation for how Tulsa bests its more traditional competitors in the Northeast: "Tulsa claims the second spot, with its pizzerias averaging a Google review score of 4.65. This may come as a surprise to those who haven't experienced Tulsa's burgeoning pizza scene. In the heart of America, Tulsa's pizza makers are blending traditional approaches with a distinctive Oklahoma twist, earning the city a well-deserved reputation as a pizza destination."

About Iowa City, IA, which ranked seventh, Pizzello notes that "This college town brings a youthful energy to its pizza offerings, with creative toppings and vibrant atmospheres that make each pizzeria a local hangout as much as a place to eat."

Now we all know that "youthful energy" is a key ingredient to making a quality pie.
