Diesel Prices Reach Record-Breaking High In Massachusetts

The average price for a gallon of diesel in Massachusetts is now a whopping $6.17 at the pump.

MASSACHUSETTS —Diesel prices in Massachusetts surged to a record high on Thursday.

The average price of diesel is now $6.17 per gallon in Massachusetts - more than $1 more per gallon than prices were a week ago, the American Automobile Association said Thursday.

"We're in crazy times right now," Mark Schieldrop of AAA Northeast told the Boston Herald on Wednesday. "To see diesel prices at $6.10, you have to rub your eyes and take another look. It's unimaginable right now."

The Bay State has been fighting crippling gas prices along with the rest of the nation since Russia first invaded Ukraine back in February.

Only a year ago, diesel prices in Massachusetts were only about $3.o0 a gallon. New England sees higher diesel prices than the rest of the country, mostly because there isn't access to the same pipelines.

Regular gas prices are also ticking back up, as Thursday's average in Massachusetts sits at $4.26 per gallon, up 14 cents from last week's average of $4.12. The average price of a gallon of gas in Boston sits at $4.27, and if you're traveling down the cape, a gallon of gas will cost you $4.33.
