To meet the community&rsquo;s growing needs, JSUMC launched a $45 million construction project to create a new, dedicated cardiovascular services suite, including 10 state-of-the-art, mixed-use interventional, electrophysiologic, and structural heart disease procedure rooms, set to open early 2025. Members of JSUMC&rsquo;s cardiovascular leadership team recently visited the construction site and reviewed plans.

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has recognized Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center with HeartCARE Center National Distinction of Excellence for its demonstrated commitment to providing patients with a comprehensive, high-quality culture of cardiovascular care. 
Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) is one of six Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) medical centers that have achieved the ACC&rsquo;s HeartCARE Center National Distinction of Excellence in 2024, based on meeting extensive accreditation criteria, and through their ongoing performance registry reporting. Epilepsy is the result of abnormal electrical activity in the brain, and the most common symptoms are sudden unusual behaviors, such as temporary confusion, staring and uncontrollable movements. 
According to the Epilepsy Foundation, epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder in the world affecting about 50 million people and causing them to have recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Seizures are brief episodes of involuntary movement that can affect the entire body or just part of it. They can also cause loss of consciousness and control of bladder or bowel function, among other disorders. 
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s sort of an electrical storm, if you will,&rdquo; says neurologist <a href="https://doctors.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/provider/Arun%20R%20Antony/2310656" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Arun Antony, M.D.</a>, director, Epilepsy and Seizure Disorder Program, Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. &ldquo;And although epilepsy is most common in children, it can develop at any point in a person&rsquo;s life.&rdquo; 
The type of seizures that occur depend on what section of the brain is affected. &ldquo;The most concerning symptom is convulsions, which are dangerous because they can lead to accidents, falls and fractures,&rdquo; Dr. Antony says. &ldquo;But some people with epilepsy can have staring spells and short episodes of unresponsiveness. Sometimes there are abnormal movements or sensations that can last for one to three minutes. Seizures can present in a wide variety of ways.&rdquo; 
Epileptic seizures themselves are often brief, but can produce ripple effects across the entire brain, hindering normal brain cell activity and even killing brain cells. Usually brain damage from epileptic seizures occurs gradually over several years. But if someone has seizures that last longer than five minutes, damage can happen much faster&mdash;over weeks. 
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s important to prevent seizures from persisting for more than a few minutes,&rdquo; Dr. Antony says. &ldquo;Those who experience prolonged seizures can have cognitive issues such as memory impairment or amnesia.&rdquo; 
Dozens of different medications are now available to treat epilepsy, and individual patients often respond very differently to each. Combining those with other approaches, including special diets, neurostimulation devices or surgery, can help control how often epilepsy patients experience seizures and how severe they are. This, in turn, can decrease any resulting damage to the brain. 
People with epilepsy may also benefit from extensive electroencephalogram (EEG) testing to measure electrical activity in the brain and treat seizures at the moment they occur. &ldquo;Many lifestyle changes can help control seizures by controlling triggers,&rdquo; Dr. Antony explains. Seizure triggers can include; stress, sleep deprivation and certain medications&mdash;particularly antidepressants, diphenhydramine, stimulants, tramadol and isoniazid, according to the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4767205/#:~:text=Antidepressants%2C%20diphenhydramine%2C%20stimulants%20(including,new%20drugs%20enter%20the%20market." rel="nofollow" target="_blank">National Institutes for Health</a>. 
&ldquo;I always tell patients that controlling triggers is as good as adding a few more medications to their list,&rdquo; Dr. Antony says. &ldquo;Leading a healthy, normal, fulfilling life with epilepsy is not only possible, but even more likely when patients actively manage their seizures and follow their doctor&rsquo;s guidance.&rdquo; 
Jersey Shore University Medical Center recently opened the Dr. Robert H. and Mary Ellen Harris Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, part of the comprehensive Epilepsy and Seizure Disorder Program. Hackensack Meridian Health Local Community Events in August

Over the past 25 years, more than 970 children have died of heatstroke, because they were left or became trapped in a hot car, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). &ldquo;The saddest part of this statistic is that all of these deaths were preventable,&rdquo; says Harpreet Pall, M.D., MBA, CPE, chair of pediatrics, Hackensack Meridian Children&rsquo;s Health K. Hovnanian Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. With 14 pediatric vehicular heatstroke deaths in the U.S. including two in New Jersey already this year, 2024 could be one of the worst years on record. 
Eighty percent of the rise of temperature in a vehicle occurs within 30 minutes or less, with maximum temperatures exceeding 150&#8457;, and interior vehicle temperatures can be 50&#8457; higher than the temperature outside. &ldquo;Considering this, when the temperature is just 75&#8457;, temperatures inside a vehicle can exceed 120&#8457;,&rdquo; explains Scott Smilen, M.D., FACOG, chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Heatstroke begins when a person&rsquo;s core body temperature reaches 104&#8457;. &ldquo;A child's body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's,&rdquo; said Dr. Pall. A child can die when their body temperature reaches 107&#8457;. &ldquo;When a child or infant is left in a vehicle, their temperature can rise quickly and the situation can quickly become very dangerous,&rdquo; said Dr. Smilen. 
&ldquo;The good news is that parents, caregivers, and in fact everyone can play an important role in preventing hot car deaths,&rdquo; said Dr. Pall. People should simply follow a few guidelines to help prevent the loss of a loved one or medical emergency, including the following. 
<ul><li dir="ltr">Never leave a child in a vehicle unattended for any length of time. Rolling windows down or parking in the shade does little to change the interior temperature of the vehicle.</li><li dir="ltr">Make it a habit to check their entire vehicle &mdash; especially the back seat &mdash; before locking the doors and walking away. </li><li dir="ltr">Ask childcare providers to call if your child doesn&rsquo;t show up for care as expected.</li><li dir="ltr">Place a personal item like a purse or briefcase in the back seat, as another reminder to look before &lsquo;you lock.&rsquo; Write a note or place a stuffed animal in the passenger's seat to remind you that a child is in the back seat.</li><li dir="ltr">Store car keys out of a child's reach and teach children that a vehicle is not a play area.</li></ul>
&ldquo;We all can assist in preventing hot car deaths as well by taking a couple other steps,&rdquo; said Dr. Smilen. &ldquo; Always lock your car when you aren't using it. Even if you don't have a child of your own, a child in your neighborhood could get into your unlocked vehicle. If you see a child alone in a locked car, act immediately and call 9-1-1. A child in distress due to heat should be removed from the vehicle as quickly as possible and rapidly cooled.&rdquo;

Heart care experts at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) are now providing patients with the AGENTTM Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB), designed to treat coronary in-stent restenosis (ISR) in patients with coronary artery disease. Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle and wrap around the outside of the heart. Following proper preparation to re-open a previously stented artery that has re-narrowed due to plaque or scar tissue, the device is inserted and transfers a therapeutic dose of paclitaxel to the artery wall to help prevent ISR reoccurrence. 
With its approval by the U.S. FDA in 2024, it is the first drug-coated coronary balloon in the U.S. and provides a dedicated treatment option for ISR. AGENT DCB is also commercially available in many international markets and has been used to treat more than 100,000 patients globally.
&ldquo;We are pleased to have performed the first procedure in New Jersey using AGENT DCB to treat coronary ISR, an approach that enables us to help prevent reoccurrence of this challenging condition, and without leaving behind another layer of permanent metal implants,&rdquo; said Matthew Saybolt, M.D., FACC, medical director, Structural Heart Disease Program, JSUMC. &ldquo;While drug-eluting stents used to treat blocked coronary arteries provide good results for many patients, ISR may still occur. In this condition, a previously stented artery becomes re-narrowed or blocked by scar tissue or plaque.&rdquo; ISR accounts for 10 percent of all percutaneous coronary interventions in the U.S. Patients with ISR may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, weakness, irregular or fast heartbeat and sweating.
&ldquo;We provide our academic medical center&rsquo;s expert clinicians, like those on our cardiovascular teams, with the latest technologies so that they can continue to provide the best care to all our patients. I&rsquo;m glad we are able to provide AGENT DCB to the community we serve,&rdquo; said Vito Buccellato, MPA, LNHA, president and chief hospital executive, JSUMC. Traditional therapies used to treat ISR in the U.S. have included placing additional layers of metal stents, uncoated balloon angioplasty and radiation, all of which may not provide ideal outcomes in some cases.

Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center, licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health for open heart surgery, have been recognized by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) for their demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients receiving transcatheter valve repair and replacement procedures. They achieved Transcatheter Valve Certification based on evaluation of their teams&rsquo; ability to meet standards for multidisciplinary teams, formalized training, shared decision-making, and registry performance.
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive procedure that replaces a diseased aortic valve with a man-made valve. It is used to treat aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve that can increase strain on the heart and lead to heart failure. TAVR is provided to patients at just 18 hospitals in New Jersey, including Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) and Jersey Shore University Medical Center (HUMC).
The ACC&rsquo;s Transcatheter Valve Certification is an external review and certification process that pairs with established national clinical databases to monitor patient safety and real-world outcomes related to transcatheter valve therapies. Participation in established national clinical databases such as the STS/ACC TVT Registry is required for hospitals interested in achieving Transcatheter Valve Certification.

The certification uses established national clinical measures to support clinical decisions and links process improvement to patient outcomes. Hospitals that achieve Transcatheter Valve Certification learn best practices for implementing evidence-based medicine to support patient-centered decision-making and can track key performance metrics to better identify opportunities for improvement.

Early this year, HMH announced a $45 million construction project at JSUMC, to be completed late 2024. It will create a new, dedicated cardiovascular services suite, including 10 mixed-use interventional, electrophysiologic, and structural heart disease laboratories to meet their community&rsquo;s growing needs. HUMC cardiologists provide services in the state-of-the-art &lsquo;smart hospital,&rsquo; surgical and intensive care tower Helena Theurer Pavilion, which opened in 2023. Summer is finally here! Being outdoors is a great way to relax with family and friends, and what better place to be than the Jersey Shore. While the beach and ocean are an ideal place to spend a summer day, there are some precautions we can take to make sure our loved ones, as well as ourselves, don&rsquo;t end up in the hospital.
In my younger days, I was a lifeguard, then an EMT and paramedic before becoming a doctor, so I&rsquo;m very familiar with the need for safety at the beach. Now, as a critical care specialist at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, I see too many children and adults coming to our medical center for life-saving emergency care after breathing in saltwater or nearly drowning. Even without total asphyxiation, breathing in saltwater carries serious health risks. 
There are a few steps you can take to prevent dangerous situations from happening. Seems like it doesn&rsquo;t need to be said, but first and foremost learn to swim and have your children learn to swim through formal lessons, and don&rsquo;t overestimate your ability, that way they and you have an educated respect for the water. Also, be sure to-
<ul><li dir="ltr">Swim near a lifeguard whenever possible</li><li dir="ltr">Never swim or allow your children to swim alone or without a &lsquo;water-watcher&rsquo; while swimming in the ocean</li><li dir="ltr">Just like driving a car, never participate in water recreation when under the influence of alcohol or drugs</li><li dir="ltr">Be aware of warning signs or flags at the beach; they will make you aware of hazardous conditions that you can avoid.</li></ul>
There are two other important safety precautions to keep in mind while at the beach. Rip currents are currents of water flowing away from shore at surf beaches that typically form near sandbars and structures such as piers and rocks. These currents can prevent you from returning to the shore. Most importantly, you should relax if caught, rip currents don&rsquo;t pull you under the water. Don&rsquo;t swim against the current, follow its direction towards the shoreline or breaking waves towards the beach. If you are unable to escape from the current, wave your arms to bring the attention of lifeguards, who will be able to help you. 
Please know, the beach surf can cause traumatic injury; protect your neck and spine. Don&rsquo;t dive headfirst into the water or run and jump into unknown water. Don&rsquo;t dive toward the bottom of waves or off a pier, jetty, or bridge. If you wipeout in the surf, try to land as flat or parallel to the ground as possible, with your arms protecting your head. If you find someone incapacitated on the beach, don&rsquo;t try to move them, call 9-1-1. 
Our President &amp; Chief Hospital Executive Vito Buccellato has been tremendously supportive of all our adult and pediatric emergency services, but, as he says, &ldquo;let&rsquo;s do our best to prevent our community from needing them!&rdquo; I agree, and will continue to spend a lot of time at the beach with friends and family. There is no other place I enjoy more. But please, take every precaution to keep everyone safe and enjoy the summer!

Summer is Here, Let’s Stay Safe at the Jersey Shore!

Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center held its annual Resident &amp; Fellow Graduation Ceremony June 20 at Bell Works in Holmdel. Jersey Shore University Medical Center&rsquo;s (JSUMC) medical education faculty and administrators celebrated the graduation of 84 residents and fellows in 10 residency and 10 fellowship programs. For the past three years, JSUMC&rsquo;s medical education program has celebrated the largest graduating classes in its history.
&ldquo;Our patients received exemplary care from this class of outstanding physicians and health care professionals,&rdquo; said David S. Kountz, M.D., MBA, MACP, vice president, Academic Affairs, JSUMC, and chief academic officer, Hackensack Meridian Health and senior associate dean, Graduate Medical Education, and professor of medicine, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m proud that many of our graduates will continue their careers at JSUMC, as well as other Hackensack Meridian medical centers, and know they will have successful careers in medicine.&rdquo;
JSUMC sponsors ACGME-accredited residency training in General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, and Psychiatry, as well as residencies in Pharmacy, Podiatry and Dentistry. 
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a privilege to be among the first to congratulate our graduates,&rdquo; said Kenneth N. Sable, M.D., MBA, FACEP, regional president, Southern Market, Hackensack Meridian Health, who opened the ceremony. &ldquo;As Monmouth and Ocean counties&rsquo; leading academic medical center, dating back to the 1950&rsquo;s, our residency and fellowship offerings and graduating classes continue to grow as we educate new generations of extraordinary physicians.&rdquo;
Additionally, the medical center provides a Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship through the Department of Pediatrics; six fellowships in the Department of Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease, Endocrinology, Critical Care, Pulmonary Disease, Nephrology, and Hematology / Medical Oncology; and fellowships in the Department of Psychiatry; Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine.

Medical residency training is required to practice as a physician in the U.S., and begins after graduation from medical school. Fellowship training enables physicians to specialize in specific fields of medicine. JSUMC will welcome 90 new residents and fellows to begin their respective training programs July 1.
