Somerset County Stop & Shop Supermarket Closing

Stop & Shop's parent company Friday announced the closure of 32 stores, including one in Somerset County.

FRANKLIN, NJ — A Stop & Shop supermarket in Somerset County is among 10 in New Jersey that will close as part of the chain's strategy to "position the company for growth," according to a news release.

The chain will shutter 32 stores across the Northeast. In Somerset County, the store closing is located at 1221 State Route 27 in Franklin Township.

The supermarket chain initially announced plans to close stores in May.

"Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand," Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in a news release.

The company said it will offer jobs at other supermarket locations to workers whose stores will close.
