HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken has published the draft Hoboken Housing Authority Redevelopment Plan — a document that discusses how to demolish and rebuild 1,354 units of public low-income housing, and what to add to it.

The document came after six months of public surveys (see results below) and meetings.

The housing projects — consisting of both low-income and senior housing — receive federal subsidies based on residents' incomes. As with other aging public housing across the country, the federal government is encouraging it to be redeveloped.

The rebuild will be done in phases so that families can be placed at another building while theirs is worked on.

The city explained, "The Plan requires the replacement or substantial rehabilitation of the existing 1,354 HHA units and includes the provision of significant improvements to the neighborhood’s infrastructure, circulation updates, recreational amenities and open spaces, and allows for additional non-HHA units (with a 15% affordable and 10% workforce housing set aside)."

The city said that survey results showed that among people both in the buildings and in other parts of Hoboken:

  • Majority (+/- 60 percent) would prefer buildings be no taller than 6 stories.
  • For new, additional units, Workforce Income Housing at 80-120 percent adjusted median income is preferred
