A Bergen County Tourism website highlights family-friendly, affordable, and some free activities in that part of North Jersey.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Interested in taking a North Jersey staycation, instead of waiting at the airport or fighting hours of traffic?

You may have been missing out on some attractions and sites in your own backyard. Some are even free.

Bergen County Executive James Tedesco, the County Board of Commissioners, and the Bergen County Division of Economic Development recently launched of DiscoverBergenCounty.com.

It's a tourism website for visitors and residents to learn about family-friendly and affordable activities, cultural and historic sites, and recreational assets that BergenCounty — located in the northeastern part of the state, just north of Hudson County — has to offer.

It's grouped by category (Parks, Malls, Dining, Attractions, Museums) and by season (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring).

Bergen County is home to nearly 200 arts and history organizations, 9,000 acres of parkland, and a variety of shopping and entertainment destinations, including several major malls.

OK, So What's On There?

Just some of the destinations and activities on the site:

  • Darlington County Lake and Splash-On water obstacle course in Mahwah, where guests from any area can pay a fee to enter. Bergen County residents get a discount. Find out more here.
  • The Bergen County Zoo, located at another attraction, Van Saun Park in Paramus.
  • American Dream entertainment/retail complex in East Rutherford. It's a sprawling retail/entertainment complex with attractions like Nickelodeon Universe, restaurants, unique shops, and quirky features like ride-on animals.
  • The John Barrymore Museum/Film Center in Fort Lee.
  • Free concerts and movies in the county (see the list here).
  • Trails, riverkeeper tours, and much more.
