Princeton Opens Cooling Centers Due To Incoming Heat Wave

The Municipality has opened cooling centers in several areas.

PRINCETON, NJ — The year's first heat wave hit New Jersey on Monday. According to the National Weather Service, this heat wave is expected to last at least for the next few days with temperatures expected to touch 100 degrees in some parts of New Jersey.

With the anticipated high temperatures this week, the Municipality has opened cooling centers in several areas.

Monument Hall - Main Meeting Room, 1 Monument Drive
Monday, June 17 - Monday, June 24: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Witherspoon Hall - Community Room, 400 Witherspoon Street
Friday, June 21: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday, June 22 - Monday, June 24; 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Princeton Public Library, 65 Witherspoon Street

Monday June 17 - Thursday, June 20: 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. (Closed on Wednesday, June 19),Friday, June 21 - Saturday, June 22: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday June 23: 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Here's what to do during a heat wave:

  • Check on those who are at higher risk of heat-related illness such as those aged 65+
  • Stay hydrated
  • Limit outdoor activity when possible

During the heat wave temperatures are expected to touch 100 degrees in some parts of New Jersey.

"The increased demand for cooling is going to be a problem here. This could have some impacts on the power grid," AccuWeather Chief Video Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

Here's the weather forecast for the next few days:

  • Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 94. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Tuesday Night mostly clear, with a low around 67. South wind 5 to 10 mph.
  • Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 95. South wind around 5 mph. Wednesday Night mostly clear, with a low around 68. South wind around 5 mph.
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 98. Thursday Night partly cloudy, with a low around 71.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 101.
