'Critical Need' Prompts Wednesday's Blood Drive In Islip: FD
The Islip Fire Company is hosting a blood drive in the face of a "critical need" for blood, the fire department says.
ISLIP, NY —New York is facing a "blood emergency" due to a significant drop in blood donations preceding and following Memorial Day weekend," according to the New York Blood Center, which declared the emergency in early June when donations had been "2,100 units short of what is needed to meet hospital demand."
On Wednesday, the Islip community is slated to rally to boost blood donations at the Islip Fire Company, located at 28 Monell Avenue, from 1:45 to 7:45 p.m., in light of a "critical need" for donations.
According to the fire company, appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcome. Those planning on donating blood must remember to eat, drink and bring ID.
