Heat Wave Hits NYC As Air Quality Alert Is Issued Due To Extreme Heat

NEW YORK CITY — The first heat wave of the year is expected to hit New York City Tuesday, with temperatures expected to peak around noon — air quality and heat advisories have already been issued.

Officials have issued an air quality alert for New York City, northern New Jersey and the Hudson Valley beginning at 11 a.m. that will last until 11 p.m.

While temperatures will continue to build to upwards of 90 degrees, a heat advisory is expected to be issued later this week on Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to peak between noon and 8 p.m. daily, though evenings will hold little relief, with projected temperatures still in the 70s.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Humidity will make it feel like the upper 90s, according to forecasters. .

The National Weather Service’s HeatRisk map has labeled most of New York as a level 4 for Thursday. Level 4 showcases extreme heat that is either rare or long in duration.

Experts recommend avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon and evening hours, which is usually the hottest part of the day. People who must be outside are encouraged to drink plenty of water and take breaks to cool off in the shade, according to AccuWeather.

Due to the upcoming heat wave, the city has opened more than 500 cooling centers. They are open to the public and include libraries, senior centers and other locations.
