 Dance Movement Classes for Adults&nbsp;at The BATES HOUSE

Do you feel the urge to dance? Did you take modern or ballet classes when you were younger? Come back to the dance floor and move your body to contemporary music with April Masten. No knowledge of technique required.
Class format: traditional dance class format with standing and floor warm-ups and stretches; across-the-floor steps and moves; and a combination that we will learn and dance together
Class schedule:
Tuesdays 9:45-10:45AM (join any day)
First class free / thereafter by donation 
Bring a mat for floorwork and a water bottle for hydration
Location: The Bates House in Frank Melville Memorial Park, Setauket, NY (at the end of Bates Road–up the little hill behind the woodshed across from Emma Clark Library)
Teacher bio: April is in her sixties. She teaches history at Stony Brook University (where she makes her students dance). She started dancing in high school in California; studied modern, ballet, and ethnic dance in college; and taught dance and aerobic exercise for 20+ years before becoming an historian. April knows from experience that people around her age are an underserved dancing community! Come and dance with her!

Why Dance? It’s a happy way to get some exercise. Moving in different ways helps you stay flexible. It strengthens your mind/body connection. It’s great for relieving stress. Human beings were made to dance! 
We want YOU! No matter your age or shape! We are not trying to become professional dancers, just happy, strong, graceful movers. Don’t think of how you used to dance, think of what you can do now!

Explore the fascinating story of the development of Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk counties) between 1920 and 1980 with historian Lawrence Samuel, author of Making Long Island: A History of Growth &amp; the American Dream. Long Island was a primary site of the pursuit of the American dream, as it offered affordable home ownership for the middle class that most compellingly expressed the nation’s core mythology. Beginning in the 1960s, however, that dream began to dissolve, as the postwar economic engine ran out of steam and as Long Island became as much urban as suburban. Despite all its current economic and social challenges, a new and improved American dream appears to be emerging on Long Island, and the place unarguable remains one of the beautiful places on the planet. The Atelier at Flowerfield

No matter how many times you’ve walked along the water’s edge, you’ll find something new and exciting because it is never quite the same. Lana has long been fascinated with the deep connection to the landscape, particularly, the coastal landscape where major forces of nature - water, air, land - come together. This exhibition will showcase Lana’s recent work inspired by the Long Island, NY and New England coastline, exploring the timeless relationship between these forces, the beauty and immense power of the water and the resilience and fragility of the land.
Her goal is to make the viewer an active participant in the scene, make them feel the wind, the ocean spray, the brilliant sunlight, hear the sound of the waves, to feel that deep personal connection with nature. She wants each of her works to be a reminder that the big timeless world exists outside our everyday enclosed spaces, and that we are part of it. The expressive character of pastel lets her capture the brilliant light and texture of the coastal landscape, its movement and energy. 
Lana Ballot is a professional artist and pastel painting instructor living on Long Island. Ocean and coastal landscape are the main subjects of her work with expressive use of color and painterly mark making characteristic of her style.
Lana Ballot is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, a member of the IAPS Master Circle and a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists. She has been exhibiting and won awards in National and International Juried competitions, including the Pastel Society of America’s annual show Enduring Brilliance and the prestigious Pastel Journal’s Pastel 100 competition. 
In May 2022, Lana was part of the group of American Women Artists working in pastels, invited to exhibit in the international show Pastels of the World in Bourbonnais, Montluçon, France. In 2024, she was invited to participate in the Annual International Pastel Festival in Feytiat, France. 
Lana’s coastal work has been featured in articles and on the cover of the Plein Air Magazine (September 2021) and the Pastel Journal (June 2022). She was also featured in the Pastel Issues of the French magazine Pratique des Arts (2017 and 2020).

The Atelier presents “How to Use Oil Paints: Materials and Methods” a 2-day Workshop on Saturday, September 14th and Sunday, September 15th
Have you wanted to try oil painting but was afraid to? Then this workshop is for you. This special 2-day workshop explores the basic properties, tools and techniques of oil painting. The topics covered will include:
<ul><li>Brushes: Which ones to use, how to use them when and how to clean &amp; store them.</li><li>Mediums and basic formulas</li><li>Arranging your palette</li><li>Painting surfaces and how to prepare them</li><li>Setting up your easel, work area and how to clean it.</li><li>How to apply, blend and glaze your creation on canvas.</li><li>Painting techniques: mixing, blending, glazing and applying paint.</li></ul>
This course is open to all skill levels and all painting supplies are included. This workshop is scheduled for Saturday, September 14 (10:00am-2:00pm) and Sunday, September 15 (10:00am-2:00pm) which includes a 30-minute lunch break. The cost for this 2-day workshop, which includes materials, is $250 per person.

Join us this coming Saturday, September 14th, 10AM-4PM on the Setauket Village Green and the Caroline Episcopal Church property (Main St &amp; Dyke Rd, Setauket across from Emma S. Clark Library) for the Annual Country Fair! Over 70 Arts, Crafts and Gifts Vendors, Barn Sale, Christmas, Housewares, Food Court, Baked Goods, Basket Raffle, and Live Music. Last Chance Animal Rescue will also be there hoping that some of their fur babies will find homes! Boats on premise compliments of Great Oak Marina! 

Bring your family for a fun day in beautiful, historic Setauket. Proceeds are used to support our ever-growing Food Pantry and community outreach ministries. Rain date September 21st. For more information please call Caroline Episcopal Church at 631-941-4245.
