LONG ISLAND, NY — A heat advisory takes effect on Long Island at noon Wednesday as a heat wave bakes the region.

The advisory expires at 8 p.m. Thursday, but it could very well be extended as high temperatures are expected to be in the 90s on the island through the end of the week.

Heat index values — what the temperature feels like as heat and humidity combine — in the lower 100s are likely, the National Weather Service says.

Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency and 911 should be called if it's suspected.
