Council Rock Schools Closed Thursday Due To Storm

NEWTOWN, PA — Council Rock schools and offices will be closed Thursday for in-person learning due to a winter storm that could bring as much as 8 inches of snow to the area.

The day will be an asynchronous virtual learning day for all students, the district said.

A snow emergency will take effect in Newtown Township at 6 a.m. Thursday and last until 6 p.m. Friday. During the emergency, residents are not allowed to park their vehicles on any road or street within the township. Depending upon conditions, the emergency may be extended.

A winter storm watch remains in effect for the area until 1 p.m. Friday. The heaviest snow is expected to come Thursday morning through early Thursday afternoon, with sleet and freezing rain mixing in later in the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. Light wintry precipitation should continue into the daytime hours on Friday.

Total snow and sleet accumulations of 5 to 8 inches and small ice accumulations are possible.

In response to the incoming weather, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission plan to implement travel restrictions on trucks and other vehicles on certain roadways.
