NEWTOWN, PA — The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Newtown and much of southeastern Pennsylvania that will run until early Sunday morning.

The flash flood watch started just after 4 p.m. Friday and lasts until 2 a.m. Sunday, with a “slow-moving weather system” set to bring a series of thunderstorms through the region over the weekend.

Hot and humid weather earlier this week means the storms are likely to include torrential downpours, forecasters said. The slow-moving system means “there is an elevated potential for localized flash flooding,” especially in areas that have seen substantial rainfall in recent weeks, the NWS said.

A heat advisory is in effect in the Newtown area until 8 p.m. Friday, with heat index values expected to reach up to 103 degrees. The National Weather Service also issued a flood advisory for central Bucks County, which ends at 8:30 p.m.

Residents should be aware of their surroundings during the advisory times and should not drive on flooded roads, the NWS said.
