NEWTOWN, PA — The signs are up and in place. Now it’s just a matter of time until the doors swing open at four new Newtown Township businesses.

By far the largest sign belongs to the Capital Grille, which continues to renovate the former Pier One store at the Village at Newtown Shopping Center on Eagle Road.

Capital Grille, an exclusive upscale fine dining restaurant and steakhouse, will open an 8,000 square foot, 236-seat restaurant later this year.

The newest business sign in the township was lifted into place last week at the Village at Newtown South on Eagle Road.

Patch was the first to bring you the news that Santina’s Italian Pastry by Nino will be setting up shop at the former Smoothie King store near the Newtown Book Store.

Jane Mendello and her husband, Nino, who have owned and operated Ninos Pastry Shoppe on Quakerbridge Road in Trenton since 1996, are hoping to open the new bakery sometime this spring.

Ninos Pastry Shoppe was opened in Hamilton back in 1996 by Nino and Jane. Nino was born and raised in Palermo, Sicily. He came to America with his family when he was 15 years old. He worked in different bakeries, took everything he learned, opened his own bakery and realized his dream.

Over the years, the couple built the pastry shop into one of the best around known for its cannolis, pies, cookies, cakes, pastries and much more.

The shoppe also specializes in cream donuts, Danish, crumb cake, tea biscuits, walnut rings and Italian pastries, including cookies, cakes and other goodies, and other goodies.

A sign has also recently appeared in the windows at Goodnoe Corner on North Sycamore Street announcing the future site of Amma’s South India Cuisine.

The space, which has been vacant since Zoës Kitchen closed its doors in February 2023, is being renovated into the township’s newest dining experience where the spicy foods of South India will be featured.

Amma’s South India Cuisine has built a large following and a reputation for good food at its locations in University City, Center City and in Voorhees, New Jersey.

The restaurant, owned and operated by Sathish Varadhan, specializes in homestyle cooking from the southern regions of India and is named “Amma’s” after the Tamil word meaning “mother.”

After immigrating to the United States in 2010, Varadhan opened his first restaurant in Voorhees, New Jersey. He has since opened locations in Center City and University City across the river in Philadelphia.

Another sign has appeared at the Village at Newtown Shopping Center between Crumbl Cookies and Bomba Tacos announcing the future site of Bath & Body Works.

According to the shopping center's website, the chain of bath and body beauty and fragrance stores has leased a 2,300-square-foot space at the center.

Over the weekend there was a lot of hammering and construction happening just inside the door.

Known as the "Home of America's Favorite Fragrances," Bath & Body Works carries personal care and home fragrance, including top-selling collections for fine fragrance mist, body lotion and body cream, three-wick candles, home fragrance diffusers, and liquid hand soap.

When it opens, a sign on the front of the building says it will introduce White Barn, the chain’s “newest fragrance destination.”

The Ohio-based retailer operates 1,850 Bath & Body Works locations throughout the U.S. and Canada and more than 480 international franchised locations. It also operates an online storefront at bathandbodyworks.com.
