Tyler State Park To Be Sprayed For West Nile Mosquitoes

Tyler State Park will be sprayed for West Nile mosquitoes this Thursday, the county announced.

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — A mosquito spray will be conducted at Tyler State Park this Thursday, the county announced.

The Bucks County Mosquito Control Program said it will conduct an ultra-low volume mosquito control operation to reduce high populations of mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile Virus. Parts of Northampton Township will also be sprayed.

According to the county, the treatment will be administered via truck-mounted and Quad-mounted equipment, spraying mosquito habitats in residential and park locations. Trucks used in the spray are identified with Bucks County seal logos located on the doors.

"The equipment dispenses DeltaGard at a rate 0.75 ounces per acre. This product is designed to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations. These application materials have a very low toxicity profile to mammals and will have negligible impact to non-target insects and the environment," the county said in an announcement.

In addition to Tyler State Park, the Spring Garden Mill and Woodstock Drive area right outside the park and above Route 332 in Northampton Township will be sprayed.

Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, all residents in areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of contracting West Nile encephalitis.

If weather conditions do not allow application on Thursday, the spray will be done the following evening.
