NARRAGANSETT, RI — An 18-year-old North Kingstown man was charged with carrying a weapon while under the influence and disorderly conduct at Narragansett Town Beach Wednesday night, police said Thursday.

Patrolling officers first noticed a group of teenagers involved in an argument that escalated into a fight around 9:30 p.m., after which beach security attempted to disperse the crowd, according to police.

It was then that police noticed that Adams, who a witness later described as yelling and waving a gun, had fled the scene, police said. They chased Adams on foot, found a replica BB gun in his possession, and safely placed him under arrest.

"Displaying a weapon, real or replica, is an extremely dangerous act," Narragansett Police Chief Sean Corrigan said. "Responding police officers often have only a split second to decide if they are facing a lethal threat. I am proud of our police officers and community service officers, who showed restraint and handled the entire situation professionally."

The department also emphasized that "alcohol and guns do not mix," and that "individuals whose judgment may be impaired by any substance should not handle firearms, whether real or replica, with or without a permit."
