Scammers Posing As North Kingstown Police Officers To Steal Money

North Kingstown police say the scammers told victims they were police officers and need to pay them in gift cards to clear a warrant.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — North Kingstown police have urged residents to watch out for scammers pretending to be police officers to steal money.

Recently, a North Kingstown resident received a phone call from someone claiming they were a police officer.

Police said the caller told the victim they were wanted on an active arrest warrant. The caller then said to clear the warrant, the victim needed to pay a certain amount of money in the form of pre-paid gift cards, police said.

"Please be aware that our police officers would never call asking for money to clear a warrant, and would definitely never ask for you to provide pre-paid gift card numbers to pay anything," North Kingstown police said in a Facebook post.
