Threats At North Kingstown Apartments End Peacefully, Man Surrenders

Police said they learned about the threat after WCVB said a man called saying they should write a story about him wanting to kill people.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — Police said a North Kingstown man called a Boston news station and said he had was going to kill people with guns was arrested on Tuesday.

Around 2:14 p.m, North Kingstown police received a call from WCVB-TV in Boston, Massachusetts, reporting that a man living on Lenox Court called the station and said he had a story for them involving him possessing "guns" and wanting to "kill people."

Police said they called the man, who told officers he was alone with a gun and wanted to "kill people."

A perimeter was established while the fire department staged nearby. All residents in the surrounding apartments were evacuated while police began negotiating with the suspect. The department’s mental health clinician was also requested to respond to the scene.

Through further conversation, officers talked the man down, police said. He then cooperated with their efforts to end the situation peacefully and came out unarmed.

The clinician certified him — meaning he was required to go to the hospital for a mental health evaluation. Police did not release the man's identity or say if any charges would be filed.

Police said the apartment was searched, and no weapons were located.
