ACROSS AMERICA — Motor vehicle departments across the United States started to see service resume following a nationwide outage Thursday, according to officials in multiple states.

Officials in Illinois, Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, Arkansas and Colorado all confirmed they experienced an outage.

"We are currently experiencing a nationwide network outage at our DMV facilities," tweeted Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. "All DMVs across the country are currently down."

Virginia's DMV said the outage stemmed from "a third-party technical outage," and that driver's license services were unavailable online and at all in-person locations.

"We apologize for the inconvenience. Please stay tuned to social media for updates," the agency said.

Massachusetts said it couldn't process any license or ID-related transactions due to the system outage.

"We are working to resolve this interruption with the service provider," the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles tweeted.

Colorado officials said they're reaching out to people who have an appointment at a state driver's license office to reschedule appointments due to an outage with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.

"Most driver license services, including online options, are affected, except driver license knowledge tests, endorsement tests and Commercial Driver’s License instruction permit tests, as well as scheduling hearings and requesting motor vehicle records," the Colorado DMV said in a release.

Officials in that state said there was no timeline for when services would be restored.

In New York, motor vehicle officials said: We are aware of ongoing issues impacting transactions in our offices and online, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We are working diligently to get everything back up and running and will let you know when we do."

Officials in Illinois, Virginia, Massachusetts and Arkansas later said their systems were back up and running.

"Transactions are once again processing," the Virginia DMV said. "We appreciate your patience while this issue was resolved."

Illinois echoed those sentiments, with Giannoulias telling NBC Chicago that its systems were also "back up and running."

"The database issue has been resolved and all state Revenue Offices are operating normally," the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration said.

And Massachusetts declared the service interruption has since been resolved.

"The previously reported outage has now been resolved. We appreciate your patience," Massachusetts motor vehicle officials said.
