Join us for “A Place Called Ilda.” Author Tom Shoop will discuss his 2024 book, subtitled “Race and Resilience at a Northern Virginia Crossroads.” The crossroads is Guinea Road and Little River Turnpike. Ilda was a racially integrated, now largely forgotten community, established after the Civil War by two formerly enslaved African American blacksmiths. Little River UCC’s 13.5-acre property was part of that community, and the church is prominently mentioned in Shoop’s book.
Ilda flourished as a racially integrated community before the Jim Crow era, but eventually Black residents were obliged to walk to Merrifield or Falls Church for both church and school. Today, there are many places of worship in the former Ilda, none of them restricted by race. Yet, the hate and prejudice that distorted and dismembered Ilda are still with us. Witness the recent white supremacist, antisemitic, and homophobic attacks on Pozez Jewish Community Center and Little River UCC. “A Place Called Ilda” weaves together accounts of horse thievery, attempted murder, savage beatings, hate crimes, and a long- forgotten cemetery in a gripping and often moving narrative.

Haven is a nonprofit, nonsectarian community organization of trained volunteers that offers emotional support to the bereaved, the seriously ill, the dying and to their families and friends. Haven also provides education to the community about the needs of those who are grieving.
Since September 1976 Haven volunteers have helped individuals work through their grief, offering comfort and support by sharing insights, resources and techniques that encourage recovery and healing. Haven offers individual support to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Support is conducted by trained volunteers, not therapists. No cost to meet with a volunteer. Individual support is offered daily Monday to Friday. Please contact Haven for more information.

The pandemic, our health, work, the news...so many things are vying for our attention and causing fear and anxiety. All of this can become distressing, however, there is a place where we can go to that is a private retreat from the world we live in. That is through meditation.
Join Arlene Samsel with over 30 years of experience meditating, as she discusses the benefits of meditation in reclaiming peace of mind. Participants will have an opportunity to practice the meditation technique. For adults.
