DNA Links Loudoun Man To 3 Sex Crimes In Fairfax County: Police

Fairfax County Police have charged a Loudoun County man for decades-old sex crimes thanks to advancements in DNA analysis.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A Loudoun County man was linked through DNA testing to sex crimes ranging between 1998 and 2004.

The first assault happened around 7 p.m. on Sept. 9, 1998. Police say a 48-year-old woman was jogging on a bike path in the Fair Lakes area and was assaulted. The suspect implied he had a knife before assaulting her and fleeing.

The second assault was around 11 a.m. on Aug. 3, 2000 in a home in the 11900 block of Parkside Drive in Fairfax. Police say a 66-year-old woman was asleep when she was woken by the suspect assaulting her. The victim fought the suspect and escaped by jumping from a second story balcony.

The third assault was around 10:45 p.m. on Dec. 6, 2004 at a home in the 9900 block of Whitewater Drive in Burke. A 51-year-old woman was in her basement when she saw a man exposing himself outside the sliding glass door. He fled when the victim yelled.

Detectives collected forensic evidence from the scenes and submitted it for analysis. It was only recently with advancements in DNA testing that police were able to identify Edward Eugene Pottmyer, 58, of Chantilly as a suspect.

After detectives obtained Pottmyer’s DNA linking him to the crimes, they obtained warrants to charge him with forcible sodomy and abduction with the intent to defile. Pottymer was arrested on June 5 with help from the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. He is being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
