FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Fairfax City residents hungry for a hot slice or two from Andy's Pizza no longer have to endure the traffic to Tysons. On Friday, the D.C.-area restaurant chain opened its ninth location in the Point 50 shopping center on Fairfax Boulevard.

"We've been dying to get into Fairfax," owner Andy Brown told Patch on Monday. "Our Tysons location being store number one, we drew a lot of people from Fairfax. I grew up around here. It's miserable going from Fairfax to Tysons during dinnertime, so we had a lot of requests to come out here."

As to why it took so long to come to Fairfax City, Brown pointed out that as the sole owner of the pizzeria chain, he had to be strategic. After all, he didn't have any investors or other owners to help him make the move.

"You can't just take any space," he said. "You really have to wait for the right deal to come along, and so this turned out to be the right deal."

The new Andy's Pizza in Fairfax City is located at 10408 Fairfax Blvd., the former location of A Slice of Matchbox. Brown admitted to being a little worried about opening a pizza restaurant where another pizza restaurant had gone out of business. He even talked to the Matchbox team about it, asking them if he was making the right call.

"I was so confident in our brand and our product and our first-floor parking, which we're very excited about," he said. "For a place that does as much carry-out business as we do, we are very grateful for the parking lot"

A number of new pizza chains have opened locations in Fairfax City in recent years, including Old Dominion Pizza on University Drive in Old Town and Marco's, which is just down the street on Fairfax Boulevard.

Brown is not intimidated by the competition and, as he said, he's confident in his brand.

"Anybody can buy the sausage and cheese we use," he said. "For us, our identifying factor is the the crust and you're really getting that artisan bakery, 72-hour cold fermentation time that creates a unique, tasty, crispy, crunchy, digestible crust."

Andy's Pizza also runs its stone ovens at 700 degrees, which is hotter than other commercial ovens that typically go to 550 degrees.

"If you want to get anything this good this hot, you've got to source it from elsewhere and it makes something that's unique to the area," Brown said.

Andy's Pizza's Fairfax City location is open every day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., for carryout and dine-in. Customers can order food for delivery via UberEATs and DoorDash. The restaurant also boasts an outdoor patio and a curated craft beer bar.

Besides selling whole pies, Andy's Pizza also specializes in selling fresh pizza by the slice.

"Being as affordable as we are, it's so funny to hear someone come in and be like, 'Oh, you're so expensive,'" Brown said. "Two slices and a drink for 10 bucks is cheaper than McDonald's. You can get a burger and fries with a drink for 10 bucks at McDonald's. We're really proud to be accessible and easy and quick for anybody who might be in the mood for pizza."
